We couldn't have said it better than Topaz Farm. Please help stop 1000 Friends of Oregon and the DLCD from implementing their misguided rules to shut down argitourism in Oregon. 1000 Friends of Oregon claims to be protecting farm land, but that isn't true. Small parcels of farm land like ours cannot survive to be farmed if we're not allowed to generate income from activities and products other than those we farmed ourselves. Only large mono-crop farms can do this. Those farms don't offer in-hive experiences like ours, or animal petting and pumpkins patches like others. Please write a letter TODAY in opposition to the DLCS proposed rules. See our previous post for all the ways you can help and contact your elected representatives. 🐝

We try to reserve political posts on our page to only issues of great importance. Today, we ask that you take 5 minutes of your time to write a response in OPPOSITION to the Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD)'s proposed Farmsrand Rulemaking. The new rules hurt small farms. Tell them you stand with small farms, like ours, and agritourism operators who support the community you live in. Tell them small farms need pathways to be economically viable. Tell them about every farm and every farm event you have attended that you enjoyed. Tell them about how your kids have learned about agriculture when visiting a farm in Oregon. Tell them to reconsider their proposed rules in favor of supporting small farms ability to thrive.

How you can help:

Like, share, and tell us about your favorite farm experiences in this post.

Send an email to DLCD at [email protected]

Have you heard of varroa mites? Varroa destructor is a parasite of all North American honey bee colonies and a global pest. The mites reproduce inside the capped brood cells of the developing honey bee larva. Today we uncap some drone cells to expose not one, or two, but three varroa mites in a single drone cell! This video is unedited and a little gross due to the mutilated drone larva, please use your discretion and don't watch if you don't like yucky stuff.

For everyone else, we hope you enjoy getting to see live varroa mites and hope to share some of the science and discovery that goes along with beekeeping. We believe that education is power and the more you know, the better informed consumer and beekeeper you can be!
