Pets explore the world with their noses—and sometimes their mouths. Unfortunately, that curiosity can lead them to things that are dangerous.
March is Pet Poison Prevention Month, a good reminder that common household toxins include chocolate, xylitol, human medications, certain plants, and cleaning products. Keeping these items safely out of reach is one of the best ways to protect your pet.
If you think your pet may have ingested something toxic, contact Gateway Animal Hospital or an emergency animal hospital right away.
Have questions about potential toxins in your home? We’re here to help. Call 727-577-6500.

Due to personal circumstances, Dr. Darien McLemore will be leaving Gateway Animal Hospital, effective April 4th, 2026. While we understand that this may come as a shock to our valued clients, we here at Gateway Animal Hospital would like you to feel safe and secure with your future at our practice.

At this time, Dr. Darien would like to welcome Dr. Jose Santiago and Dr. Allegra Evert to the practice. Dr. Evert will be taking over as our primary surgeon and Dr. Santiago will be available full time to support all of Dr. Darien's clients and patients in his absence. Their knowledge, compassion and dedication are beyond excellent.

While we understand this may be a big change for our valued clients, we would love to transition care over to Dr. Santiago, Dr. Evert or another one of our skilled and caring doctors you may already be familiar with. Gateway Animal Hospital is dedicated to providing seamless continuity of care during this transition. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

February is Pet Dental Health Month, making it the perfect time to check in on your pet’s oral health. If you’ve noticed bad breath, difficulty chewing, drooling, or head shyness, it may be time for a dental exam. 🦷🐶🪥

Preventive care helps protect against serious (and often costly) diseases and keeps your pet healthier, more comfortable, and more active.
Not sure if your pet is due for vaccines or preventatives? We’re happy to review their records and make recommendations tailored to their lifestyle. Give us a call and let’s keep prevention on track this year.

Happy New Year GAH Family!
A lot can change in a year—especially for our pets. Annual wellness exams give us the chance to catch health concerns early, track changes over time, and make sure your pet is feeling their very best 🐶🐱
Even pets who seem perfectly healthy can be experts at hiding discomfort. A routine exam helps us stay one step ahead and keep small issues from becoming big problems.
If it’s been a while since your pet’s last visit, January is the perfect time to schedule their annual exam. Call us or request an appointment on our website or on the Pet Desk app—we’re happy to help start the year on a healthy note!❤️
