To All My Nose Work Students, Past, Present & Future:
One of my students just posted some profound thoughts about her recent NW1 trial. Something to remember about successes & failures when competing in trials - that ribbons don’t really matter. They are inanimate, material representations that fade or get lost over time. But the connection & feeling you have from your dog is what lives on forever. Dogs don’t know what ribbons are but they sure know how much you love them & they love you. They love being with you! Please remember this as you compete in any type of dog trials!❤️🐾🐕
“As she lies on me this morning after a beautiful walk in the marina still somewhat mentally exhausted from her long day trialing yesterday, I watch her sleep and think about how much I love her.
Why complete some ask? Having us work as a team just spirals the bond between us. The love goes up a notch. Not because she earned a ribbon. It really has nothing to do with that. Nor does it have anything to do with the letters after her name. Although I love saying it😂.
The feeling how I feel today affirms we will keep doing our titles. Next will be NW2. And it's OK if she doesn't get it first time around like she did her NW1, it's really just all about the connection we had yesterday with each other amongst 50 other competitive teams, lots of organized chaos, and a ton of distraction . When I watch my girl go out there and just do her thing, and I'm part of that thing, it brings tears to my eyes.
When we are out there together, I only think about me and her and what we're doing and I feel so at peace. The peace actually over takes the nerves for me. I think that's why we do pretty good and that's when I know it's so good for my soul!
