Stars and Stripes Dog Rescue

Stars and Stripes Dog Rescue EIN # 88-0888840 We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We are grassroots, boots-on-the-ground, shelter less, foster-based and volunteer-powered organization.

The mission of Stars and Stripes Rescue and Training Center is to rescue at risk shelter dogs and to train them to become the highest quality service dogs to military veterans suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. We will rescue dogs from Northern California high-kill animal shelters. We will also network with local rescue/shelters that might have a need to transfer dogs out of their faci

lity. We also provide free medical support for dogs of service members who are involved with Service Dog programs. We also find temporary homes for their dogs while they attend those several month-long programs. Knowing their dogs are safe and well cared for while they are away helps ensure those service members can successfully complete the programs. Dogs will complete the Canine Good Citizen™ Program and must pass the CGC Test. They will then move on to Service Dog training with the focus on PSTD skills. Once the dogs pass their “Support Dog” certification training, they will be adopted out to a fully screened applicant at no cost to them or their family. We also provide temporary housing and care (including veterinary support) for the dogs of military veterans while they participate in health care programs.

Meet the Pack: Follow Their Journey, Paw by Paw

Want a front-row seat to the training? Introducing Pups on Parole — our new series following all six dogs in our very first "6-Pack" as they train to become psychiatric service dogs for veterans.

Get an up-close look at each dog's personality, watch their progress unfold week by week, and celebrate every milestone along the way — from their first "sit" to the day they're paired with a veteran who needs them most.

This is more than a training log. It's a front-row seat to six second chances in motion — and a reminder of what's possible when a dog and a person find each other at exactly the right time.

Want the bigger picture — how this partnership with California State Prison – Sacramento came together, and what the Pawsitive Outlook Program is all about? That story lives on our Pawsitive Outlook Program page.

BIG NEWS: Stars and Stripes Dog Rescue has officially launched our Prison Dog Program!

Our inaugural "6-Pack" — six rescue dogs from Placer County Animal Services — has arrived at California State Prison-Sacramento and begun training to become psychiatric service dogs for veterans living with PTSD.

Here's how it works:
✅ Six rescue dogs are paired with twelve inmate handlers
✅ Handlers provide 24/7 care and training over 3–4 months
✅ Dogs learn obedience, public access skills, and psychiatric service dog foundations
✅ Graduates are placed with veterans — completely FREE of charge

The "6-Pack" isn't just a class of dogs — it's six opportunities for healing, hope, and second chances. For the dogs. For the handlers. For the veterans who will one day call them their own.

This program was founded in memory of Airman Dustin Aimes, who served at Beale Air Force Base. His mother Susan turned unimaginable grief into a mission — and today, that mission is changing lives.

We are deeply grateful to the staff and volunteers at Placer County Animal Services, whose compassion made this first 6-Pack possible.

"Our first 6-Pack represents exactly why this program exists. Six rescue dogs receive a second chance, twelve inmate handlers gain purpose and valuable skills, and ultimately six veterans will receive highly trained companions to support their healing journeys." — Susan Aimes, Founder & CEO

This is just the beginning. Stay tuned as we follow our first 6-Pack through their training journey.

What an incredible two days at the Placer Stand Down!

The final numbers are in, and well over 500 veterans registered for this year’s event. We are truly honored to have had the opportunity to support so many veterans and their beloved dogs.

Throughout the event, we were able to provide:

🐶 Vaccines for 45 dogs
🎁 Over $3,500 worth of donated dog supplies distributed FREE to veterans and their pets

We had the privilege of meeting so many amazing veterans — including several familiar faces from last year along with many new ones. Hearing their stories, seeing their smiles, and witnessing how much these resources meant to them was incredibly moving. Many shared how grateful they were to receive support for their dogs at no cost, and moments like those remind us exactly why this mission matters.

We also want to give a huge thank you to the amazing volunteers from Blue Shield who once again showed up with compassion, kindness, and a willingness to help wherever needed. From distributing supplies to simply taking the time to listen and connect with veterans, your presence made a tremendous impact.

A heartfelt thank you as well to Spoof Dawg to the Rescue, Placer Animal Shelter, Orangevale Women’s Club, and Orangevale Food Bank for their generous donations of dog supplies. Your continued support helps us extend our reach and continue serving veterans and pets throughout our community.

We would also like to recognize our newest Advocate in Training, John W., who has already become an incredible addition to our team. Thank you for your dedication and heart for this mission.

And finally, a very special thank you to Dr. Bronwyn Signarowitz for donating her time during both days of the event to help care for the dogs of our veterans. Your generosity and compassion touched so many lives.

The 2-day event was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together in support of those who have served. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success.

Day 1 at the Placer Stand Down was nothing short of incredible.

We were honored to stand alongside so many amazing organizations and, most importantly, to serve the veterans who showed up with strength, resilience, and heart. Being able to provide dog supplies and vaccines to support both our veterans and their loyal companions was a powerful reminder of why this mission matters so deeply.

A huge thank you to the amazing volunteers from Blue Shield who showed up in a big way—donating their time, energy, and compassion to help us distribute dog supplies throughout the day. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The gratitude, the stories, the connections—today was full of moments we won’t forget.

We’re just getting started… and we’re looking forward to an even bigger Day 2.

If you’re coming out tomorrow, we can’t wait to see you.

Tomorrow we honor Dustin.

Birthdays are meant to celebrate a life—and Dustin’s life continues to do just that. Though he is no longer here in the way we wish, his spirit lives on in every act of compassion, every second chance, and every life changed through this mission.

Dustin’s legacy is not defined by loss, but by love. A love that continues to grow, to serve, and to bring people and dogs together in ways that heal, restore, and give purpose.

As we remember him on his birthday, we invite you to be part of that legacy. Whether it’s through kindness, support, or simply taking a moment to reflect—he lives on through all of us who choose to make a difference.

Happy Birthday, Dustin. Your impact is still being written every single day.

People ask us about this all the time, and as luck would have it, this arrived in my email this morning. It captures the explanation perfectly.

Dogs are becoming more present in the workplace - and not only service dogs. Understand the rules that may apply to your small business.
