Five Years

Five years since the phone call,
five years since the quiet came,
and still I catch myself listening
for the way you said my name.

You used to talk about the dogs,
the ones no one would choose,
the scared ones in the back,
the ones with the most to lose.

You never got to build it, son,
so I picked up your dream,
and every leash, and every kennel door
is stitched with your name at the seam.

There’s a veteran who sleeps tonight
because a dog is by his bed.
There’s a dog who has a home now
instead of a shelter bed.

They don’t know your name, Dustin,
but they’re living what you planned.
Every rescue is a piece of you
still reaching for my hand.

Five years. I miss you every day.
I’m keeping my promise, too.
Every dog we save, my boy,
we save because of you.

Calling All Attorneys: Help Us Help Veterans!

Stars & Stripes Dog Rescue is growing, and we need a legal partner to grow with us!

We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that rescues shelter dogs and places them as psychiatric service dogs with veterans, at no cost to the veteran. Today we serve Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado Counties through several programs:

🐕 Pawsitive Outlook Program: our prison-based program, where incarcerated handlers train rescue dogs to become service dogs

🇺🇸 Veteran Handler Training Program: training support for veterans working with their own dogs

🏡 Adoptions: finding loving homes for rescue dogs in our community

As we expand, we need help with contracts, adoption and placement agreements, program partnerships, liability questions, and the other legal work that comes with growth.

We're looking for a volunteer (pro bono) attorney licensed in California who believes in our mission and can offer a few hours of guidance. Experience in nonprofit, contract, or animal law is a plus, but a big heart for veterans and dogs is what matters most.

If this is you, or you know someone who might be a fit, please reach out at [email protected] or call 916 847-9986. Please share this post! You never know who in your network could help change a veteran's life.

Meet the Pack: Follow Their Journey, Paw by Paw

Want a front-row seat to the training? Introducing Pups on Parole — our new series following all six dogs in our very first "6-Pack" as they train to become psychiatric service dogs for veterans.

Get an up-close look at each dog's personality, watch their progress unfold week by week, and celebrate every milestone along the way — from their first "sit" to the day they're paired with a veteran who needs them most.

This is more than a training log. It's a front-row seat to six second chances in motion — and a reminder of what's possible when a dog and a person find each other at exactly the right time.

Want the bigger picture — how this partnership with California State Prison – Sacramento came together, and what the Pawsitive Outlook Program is all about? That story lives on our Pawsitive Outlook Program page.
