Urgent Need of Monetary Donations to Support Dental Work on Hoarding Cats from Trailer.

In February Madison Greene Humane Society took in over 36 cats from an abandoned single-wide trailer. They were taken in from horrific conditions, and each cat had significant illness, injury, or long-term disease in which we were able to treat, and are continuing to treat. Upon further inspection from a veterinarian, we discovered that 11 of these cats are in need of dental work. In order to afford this dental care, we will need help from the community to afford it - as well as to continue caring for these cats via monetary donations. If you care to donate, please visit the link below for different ways to support - through Square, a one time donation, Paypal, or donation of items through our Amazon and Chewy wishlists.

https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/donate

Thank you for your continued support, we would not exist as a shelter if not for you - our community!

Pictured below is Kendrick, one of our soon-to-be dental recipients from the hoarding situation. After his dental, he will be available for adoption!

Are you in need of a new feline friend with some big personality? Look no further than Zoe! Zoe has been in our care since July of 2024, and has often been overlooked due to her not getting along with other cats - but she would do great as an apartment cat, or ruling over her own home! Zoe is about 2 years old, so she still has a lot of youthful energy. We are working on getting her weight down at the moment, so the more activity, the better! Zoe loves to be right where you are, and is very attentive to her human. She has an eager and energetic personality, one that reminds the staff and volunteers of a puppy! She is as sweet as can be, loves head scratches, and is a big couch potato. She enjoys her bed, her scratching board and putting about the shelter. Of course like any cat, she has her boundaries and can get overstimulated - but with time, Zoe is sure to show you just how much of a great cat she truly is! If Zoe sounds like a purr-fect match for you, come by to meet her at the shelter!

Meet this week's double feature of felines, Charles and Sabastion! These two cuties are good friends, they don't necessarily need to be adopted as a pair though. They would probably benefit from having a cat to befriend in their forever home! Charles is estimated to be about 2 years old and Sabastion about 3 years of age. They both came from the same place, they were part of the group of cats that were left behind in the trailer we assisted with helping take in and get the medical care they needed. Despite what they had been through before coming to us these boys have nothing but love to give! Charles is a bit more reserved, but once he warms up he is a total lovebug. Sabastion is more outgoing and just as sweet and affectionate. They love a nice comfy spot to hang out in and enjoy a calm environment to relax in. If you're interested in learning more about them or want to meet them in person, please reach out to us today! Charles and Sabastion would love to meet you.

The kittens want to make their voices heard and let our wonderful supporters know we are running low on food! We are currently running low on Purina Kitten Dry food, fancy feast kitten wet food, Purina adult cat chow, and adult wet cat food (fancy feast or friskies are their favorite). Our felines can’t thank you enough for your continued support.

Meet this week's featured feline, Fitzgerald, who is feeling festive for Easter! He came to us in February as a stray when someone was trying to trap another cat and she caught Fitzgerald instead. Fitzgerald is estimated to be 3 years old. He is a very sweet boy who loves attention once he warms up to you! He can be a little timid at first but does get comfortable quickly. He is overall a very calm cat that we have seen so far. He loves to lounge around and relax when he isn't getting some head scratches. Fitzgerald gets along with select cats at the shelter. But like with any new cat, a slow and proper introduction is necessary. He might do just fine with another, the shelter isn't always the best place due to stress to try and make new furr-ends! If you're interested in meeting Fitzgerald, reach out to the shelter to schedule a time to meet him. He is currently at PetSmart in Hollymead. Hopefully he can hop into your home in time for Easter!! 🐰

Spring is in the Air—and our Feline Friends are Ready to Bloom in Loving Homes

March was full of fresh starts—thanks to your continued support, we welcomed 35 new animals into our care and celebrated 21 joyful adoptions! As the days get longer and flowers begin to bloom, so do the second chances for our furry friends. Read on to see how you’ve helped make a difference this season and learn more about our current residents that need a loving home!

Since last month, one of our long-term residents has found a home. She has been with us for over two years and now gets to live the rest of her life with a loving family!

Sweet Callie was also adopted this month! This beautiful momma came into us with her kittens in December. She is very chatty and very affectionate. We are so happy she found her forever home!

Adoptable Cats that Need their Fur-Ever Home!

Lottie (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/adoptable-cats) is another girl who has been with us for two years. She was found outside of the shelter and was very scared and sick. Once she gained the trust of the staff at the shelter she was able to get the treatment she needed. Lottie does sound a little different due to scar tissue from a prolonged upper respiratory infection she was battling when she came to us. She absolutely loves a nice bed or warm lap to lay in, preferably a lap so she can get attention too. She would do well with someone who wants a cuddly cat!

Meet Lovey (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/adoptable-cats) , a cat that lives up to her name! Lovey came to the shelter with her kittens back in July. All of her kittens have since found homes, now she is waiting on hers! Lovey is a very calm, quiet, and laid back cat and gets along well with other cats!

This week we want to put the spotlight on a couple felines that are in need of a nice barn home! Meet Phil! Phil is estimated to be 2 years old and would be a great barn cat for you if you are interested in one! He would like to be on his own and free to roam around your property. If you have been considering adopting a barn cat please consider Phil. He is fully vetted and ready to break out of the shelter!

This week we want to put the spotlight on a couple felines that are in need of a nice barn home! Meet Silk. Silk is estimated to be 3 years old. He will occasionally be okay with a brief pet or two and then will let you know he's had enough, so we think he has probably had some minimal experience with people but doesn't know how to interact with them properly. He would be a great barn cat for someone who might want a slightly social one. He is fully vetted and ready to break out of the shelter!

Looking for More Ways to Help?

Please consider making a donation (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/donate) ! Our work is only possible because of the generosity of our incredible team and community. With the influx of cats we've rescued this month, the need for food, medical care, and supplies has grown significantly. Every contribution—big or small—helps provide life-saving treatment and nourishment for these vulnerable animals.

We also have a wish list of supplies (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/donate) that the shelter is always in need of, so if you’d like to give in a different way, we would be incredibly grateful!

If you are not able to donate financially, please consider volunteering (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/contact-us) —we are always in need of extra hands at both our Madison Greene Shelter and the Charlottesville PetSmart.

And if you or anyone you know is looking for a sweet and cuddly addition to your family, please reach out! We would love to help you find the perfect furry companion (https://www.madison-greenehumanesociety.com/adoptable-cats) .

Are you a softie for a senior cat? Meet Smoke! This handsome cat was surrendered to us in February when his owner unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to give him up. Smoke struggled to adjust to the shelter environment. He was very shut down and depressed, he has since started to show us what a great cat he is! Smoke is 9 years old, he is a very chatty boy that loves a nice box with a blanket to lay in. He is very social with people once he's comfortable but also has a reserved side to him. When he's not getting pets or taking a nap he absolutely loves to snack on some lil soups! They are the way to his heart. We have not seen how Smoke does with other cats yet, but his previous owner informed us that he does not care for other cats, dogs, or children. Smoke did previously have a urinary blockage while in the care of his last owner and he was on a urinary diet for a while. Smoke has not had any more issues and is currently not on a restricted diet. He has no current health concerns as he recently was checked out by a vet and had bloodwork done, which was normal. Smoke is healthy and ready to steal your heart! If you are in the market to adopt and would like to open your home to a calm senior cat, please consider Smoke.

This week we want to put the spotlight on a couple felines that are in need of a nice barn home! If you are interested in a cat that doesn't want much to do with you other than for food, one of these might be a good fit for you. Meet Silk (brown tabby) and Phil (brown tabby with white). Both came to the shelter as strays at different times with no background on their previous life. Since coming to the shetler and seeing their personalities come through they have shown us that both would do best as outdoor cats. Silk is estimated to be 3 years old. He will occasionally be okay with a brief pet or two and then will let you know he's had enough, so we think he has probably had some minimal experience with people but doesn't know how to interact with them properly. He would be a great barn cat for someone who might want a slightly social one. Phil is estimated to be 2 years old and would be a great barn cat for you if you are interested in one that really doesn't want anything to do with you! He would like to be on his own and free to roam around your property. If you have been considering adopting a barn cat please consider Silk and Phil. They are fully vetted and ready to break out of the shelter! Contact us today if you're interested!

UPDATE ON TRAILER CATS RESCUE

On Saturday February 15th Madison-Greene Humane Society was called by the property manager of a trailer park in Ruckersville, VA for assistance with an animal hoarding case. We responded, along with MadCats of Madison, VA. Together we rescued 53 cats from inside the trailer, all living in horrific conditions. Madison-Greene Humane Society took in 43 of those cats, and the remaining 10 were rescued by MadCats.

Almost all of the cats were in need of medical attention. Respiratory infections, eye infections, skin wounds, and urinary infections were among the most common that needed attention. Almost all of the female cats were pregnant. In addition to treating the infections, all the cats received worming and flea treatments, plus rabies and distemper vaccines, and were spayed or neutered. In addition, 10 of the cats were also determined to need dental work done, which we are currently working on getting scheduled.

We posted the story on social media, and the response has been overwhelming. The kindness and generosity of the public has allowed us to purchase the medicine and supplies needed to feed and treat these cats. We are very grateful to everyone who helped us during this crisis.

The cost of treating these cats has put an enormous strain on our resources. We are a non-profit organization and rely almost entirely on donations to keep our doors open. The care of these cats will continue until they are healthy and ready for adoption.

Any donation, no matter how small, will go directly to the care of these cats. We are in need of food (Purina products), cleaning products such as bleach, laundry detergent, disinfecting wipes and dawn dish detergent, and most of all we need monetary donations to allow us to purchase the medicines and vaccines needed to treat the numerous infections and wounds these cats suffer from and to cover the cost of the dental procedures many of the cats need. Please consider making a monthly donation, no matter how small, to help us continue our work.

The shetler will also be holding an adoption event on March 29th and March 30th at Petsmart in Hollymead from 12pm-3pm. We will have lots of available cats, such as Poncho posted below, ready to find their forever home if you are interested in adopting to show your support as well.

Thank you!

We are excited to announce that Lizzie, one of our long timers, finally got adopted this weekend after waiting 2 years to find her forever home!! Thank you to the wonderful people that opened their home up to Lizzie. We are hoping that our other long timer, Lottie, will get lucky this St. Patrick's day and find her forever home too! Lottie has been with us for 2 years as well. She was found outside of the shelter and was very scared and sick. Once she gained the trust of the staff at the shelter she was able to get the treatment she needed. Lottie does sound a little different due to scar tissue from a prolonged upper respiratory infection she was battling when she came to us. We just take her raspy breathing/snoring as a way to keep tabs on where she is in the shelter! Lottie is estimated to be 5 years old. She absolutely loves a nice bed or warm lap to lay in, preferably a lap so she can get attention too. Lottie can get a little swatty when you stop giving her the attention she wants. So she would love a person who can cater to all of her wants and desires! Lottie coexists with the other cats here at the shelter but would probably do best in a home with other very laid back cats like herself that mind their own. Or if you don't have other cats and want her to be your only, she would love that even more! Help us find Lottie her forever home today! 🍀

Get ready for a double dose of cuteness!! This week’s cat of the week is the duo Connor and Slim Jim. These two kittens are about 8 months old. They came in when they were only about 2 months old with their two other brothers who are also still in our care. They battled some tummy issues for a while we were trying to get under control. Connor and Slim Jim have improved significantly since they started a prescription diet! It is crucial that these two continue this GI diet in the fur-ever home. We know that is a costly ask, but we know someone is out there who will fall in love with these two and be willing to take on the extra cost of the diet! Slim Jim, the solid orange, is a bit more outgoing while Connor is a bit more laid back. They both, however, are very affectionate and love attention. They are great being held and love to snuggle! Give them a spring toy and they will have a blast. They still have that kitten energy but can be calm cats too after they have a play session. They are good buddies and we would be happy to see them go home together if possible! If you’re an orange cat lover looking to add some playfulness and snuggles to your life and don’t mind the special diet these two need; please reach out to the Madison-Greene Humane Society to learn more about Slim Jim and Connor!
