Found a lost pet? Keep most animals in the neighborhood where they’re found.

Contrary to popular belief, your first instinct shouldn’t be to take a lost dog or cat to a shelter immediately. Once a dog leaves its immediate area, its chances of being reunited with an owner drop dramatically.

🔍 The data speaks for itself: A study from the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project, analyzing shelter records revealed that:

- 70% of found dogs were located within one mile of their homes.
- 42% were found less than 400 feet from their homes.

This means most lost pets never wander far—they tend to “camp out” just around the block.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude as we reflect on the incredible success of our participation in this year’s statewide PickMeSC adoption event — powered by Petco Love 💕 and organized by the No-Kill South Carolina initiative of Charleston Animal Society!🐶🐱

Thanks to your support, over 80 of our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens found their forever homes between June 20–28! 🐕🐾🐈 That’s over 80 hearts that are no longer waiting, and over 80 homes that are now filled with a little more joy, purrs, tail wags, and unconditional love. 💖

Events like PickMeSC ignite a wave of compassion for pet adoption across South Carolina. So many people visited their local shelters for the first time — and walked away with a new best friend. 🥹✨
