Grooming is a vital part of cat existence. Most often, cats do an excellent job of keeping themselves tidy and well-groomed. Sometimes though, fur care gets away from them, is missed due to disease, or has been put on the back burner due to other pressing concerns. If you notice a decrease in grooming in your own cat, be sure to give them a helping hand with either a brush or a mitt.

If a cat isn't able to groom for long enough, they may need profesional help. Guinevere is a sweet cat who was brought to us from one of our wonderful local rescue groups - Purring Hearts. Her skin was so sensitive from the amount of caught and matted fur that in order to help her, we had to provide some sedatives (hence her catheter). However, once she was relaxed, her spa day commenced and she woke up feeling like an entirely new cat. It helps that we had removed almost an entire cat worth of fur that had been weighing her down.

She is feeling great, keeping her coat well groomed, and is heading to a forever home.

In a hospital setting, dogs can heal and bring joy in a way that few other species can (including humans). 'Dogs on Call' is a program at VCU that allows dogs to visit those of us who need hospital services and are in need of that special aura that dogs bring. To qualify for visitation rights, these dogs need regular checkups and vaccinations.

The program partnered with Zoetis, a vaccine manufacturer, to help bring lyme disease protection to the dogs like Dede, Trixie, and the dog population of Richmond.

In honor of two of our Dogs on Call volunteers, DeDe and Trixie Belle, Zoetis donated a box of lyme vaccinations to our vet hospital. Thank you Mr. Brookins, DeDe, and Trixie for making everyones lives a little bit better, both in human hospitals and ours.

We often talk about how well dogs and cats can do when they end up living that life but we don't often get the chance to broadcast how well other species can do it.

Lord Ham, a 6-year-old chinchilla, somehow injured his right front leg; I suspect he was successfully defending his kingdom from unknown adversaries. Chinchillas are notoriously difficult to take radiographs on, so please forgive the odd angles of the shots we were able to obtain. If you look closely, you can see the ulna/radius (forearm) fracture in both images along with evidence of the body attempting to stabilize the break.

Ultimately, this injury cost our dear Lord Harm his limb. However, he is adjusting well to his new method of movement and still very much enjoys chowing down on his favorite delicacy - freezed dried strawberries.
