Sometimes, the hardest part of rescue is realizing that even the happily-ever-after stories don’t always stay that way.
We welcomed this sweet girl as a puppy, and two years ago, we thought we had found her the perfect home. Her family told us she was absolutely perfect. But retirement brought new travel plans, and eventually, she was spending more time being boarded than being home. They made the decision to bring her back to us.
And here she sits. For the past hour, she’s been watching the door, waiting for the people she knows and loves to come back.
Our hearts are broken for her.
We work incredibly hard to find the right homes for our dogs. We know that not every home is the right fit for every dog, and we understand that circumstances can change. But when a dog has already found a family, we want so badly for that to be their forever.
Our dogs have often been let down before they ever find their way to us. We promise them safety, love, and the opportunity for a different kind of life. When one of these stories takes an unexpected turn, it’s hard not to feel like we’ve somehow failed them.
But we haven’t given up on her. And we won’t. The family does love her, but they were not able to make the lifetime commitment to her that we had hoped. But we understand plans change. And we will always be here for her.
She deserves a home where she’s not an afterthought, where she’s part of the plans, and where coming home means exactly that.
This time, we’re hoping her forever really means forever. ❤️
