We lived in Los Angeles for a decade with very little access to natural landscapes like grass, trees, and leaves. So, it’s been a joy to see how much the dogs enjoy the change now that we’re living on two acres in rural Connecticut. 🥰

I am currently taking ’s total welfare course, and it continues to encourage us to promote and support all kinds of natural behaviors that lead to diverse actions and more joy, happiness, and fulfillment!!

Regulate your dogs nervous system and improve their welfare by allowing them to display their natural behaviors 🫶🏻

Oh to be a dog on a spring day 😭

A few thoughts on leash chasing behaviors…

We can effectively interrupt and redirect with subtlety.

I never want to give more attention to the behavior I don't want to see more of or reinforce what I dislike.

My focus is on praising when he walks nicely, interrupting leash grabbing when inappropriate, and ensuring he has adequate outlets for chasing, grabbing, and shaking before I ask him to “behave” with the leash.

He also enjoys sticks, flies, leaves, and other things he can chomp on… a true terrier! Breed distinctions are so important to understand, even if you have a bunch of rescue mutts like me. 🥰

I’ve had Bruno with me since December 2020, and he still shows new behaviors all the time 😭

Behavioral diversity isn’t just about the dog you’ve had your whole life, which was well bred or adopted from a breeder. It's also about dogs that have been traumatized and abused, and how they can show greater behavioral diversity over their lifetime.

Bruno was the first feral dog I’ve ever worked with, and when I say feral, I mean he would literally p**p himself if you went anywhere near him or even looked in his direction. It took almost 5 1/2 years of work to get him to the point where we can go to a vet visit and he can feel comfortable, and I’m just so proud of him and of us.

I'm so excited to start this new intensive course next week focused on canine welfare *specifically* with Kim Brophy . This will help us better apply these insights to all the rescue dogs under our care at and with our nonprofit 🫶🏻

Those releases hit hard 🤪

It's helpful to teach your dog that 'sit' means sit until released, and to practice this consistently. That way, when a delivery driver arrives, you can simply put your dog in a sit and wait until it's safe. 🫡

When your dog is still learning or if there's a safety concern, keep them on a leash.

Bruno is a truly feral dog who rarely seeks human touch, and when he does, it’s with me… someone who has been with him every day for the past 5 1/2 years. He’s my guy! So he gets to do whatever he wants. 🤪
