PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare & Protection Society began in 1978 with the collective actions of eight individuals who saw the need, in Pueblo, to provide help and aid to abandoned, abused and unwanted companion animals. Care for animals was provided strictly through a foster home system but it quickly became obvious that the foster home system was limited. Large numbers of adoptable animals were

still left to die in the streets or were subject to disposal at taxpayers’ expense. Pritz donated land at 3420 West 8th Street (off Pueblo Boulevard and 11th Street) and a shelter facility was built. This is where the current shelter still remains. In 1981 the PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare and Protection Society was incorporated in the state of Colorado as a non-profit organization and is recognized as a 501(c)(3) corporation by the Internal Revenue Service. PAWS For Life soon established a policy based on population control and adoption as alternatives to euthanasia and the organization began a campaign to focus public awareness on the increasing needs of helpless and homeless animals. In response to this, contributions from the public enabled us to construct a small, 10 run kennel. The shelter later expanded to 16 indoor access runs and four outside runs. In 2001 the shelter underwent a renovation project that made the shelter safer and healthier for dogs and staff and brought it into compliance with PACFA regulations. Our shelter presently has 26 runs and houses between 50 and 60 dogs at any one time. With donations from individuals and businesses, fundraising activities and an occasional grant as our only means of support we have been able to care for and adopt out several thousand animals into good homes.

🎉 Gotcha Day for Charlie Chaplin & Mae West! 🐾❤️

After spending their entire lives in the shelter, Charlie Chaplin and Mae West have finally found their forever home—together! 🏡 We waited a couple of months to share the news because the transition wasn’t easy at first, and we wanted to be sure it would work for everyone. We’re so happy to say—it has!

They’re now with a loving family who also adopted Paws kitties a few years ago, and with patience and dedication, this amazing family has helped them adjust to life outside the shelter. Mae—sweet but stubborn—had some trouble getting along with the other cats at first, but she’s making great progress. Charlie, our brave heart-surgery survivor, is soaking up every bit of love, and together they’re settling into their new life surrounded by a family who truly cares. 💕

A huge thank you to Katie, Charlie’s true angel, for supporting them financially and emotionally during their time with us—and to everyone who donated toward Charlie’s surgery. You made this happy ending possible.

From shelter life to a warm, loving home… these two finally have the happily-ever-after they deserve. ❤️🐾

Thank you, KIX 1075, for featuring our sweet Tessa as your Pet of the Month! 🐾💖

Tessa is a 10-year-old sweetheart whose world turned upside down when her beloved owner passed away. She’s gentle, loving, and still has so much life and affection to share.

Tessa does need to be the only pet in the home, so she can soak up all the love and attention she deserves.

Today is National Spoil Your Dog Day. I never knew this day existed. For me, everyday is a day to spoil your dog (and all pets). They certainly deserve it!

At Paws, we do everything we can to spoil our animals. We provide treats, enrichment programs, meet and greets, pool and yard time, staff and volunteer interaction, and walks. One of our most successful walk programs is packwalk, conducted twice a week with our dedicated volunteers. The dogs absolutely love it, get outside in nature, and receive extended attention from a kind and loving handler.
