Anthony is a valued member of our veterinary assistant team, having joined our practice in 2024. With a strong passion for both animals and medicine, pursuing a career in veterinary medicine was an easy choice. Anthony relocated from New Mexico to attend CSU-Pueblo, where he recently earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology and has been accepted to CSU Veterinary School, commencing in the fall. We have enjoyed watching Anthony's growth and though we are sad that he is leaving us soon, we are excited to see where his veterinary journey takes him. He has highly valued the mentorship provided by our veterinarians and technicians, even though he teases us about being older than him! We will miss the lively discussions about Pueblo Chiles being superior to Hatch Chiles. In his free time, Anthony enjoys riding his motorcycle, playing video games, and spending time with his cat, Remi.

How to stop your dog from pulling on the leash….

Teach a word/cue for them to follow. Pick a word that they will easily respond to.

Reward them with praise.

Stop when they pull or lunge. When they stop pulling and the leash is slack, praise/reward them and then continue on with your walk.

Be patient, be consistent and practice in different environments.

Are you traveling with your pets this summer? We recommend that you plan ahead if doing so. Make sure to schedule travel related appointments early for things like health certificates, vaccinations and microchips. If your pet is on medications or a special diet, be sure to have enough to last the duration of your trip. Plan to have fresh water available at all times and don’t forget the favorite treats and toys!

What do you do if your dog encounters a skunk and gets sprayed with that lovely stink? Nobody wants a stinky dog, so acting quickly can help reduce the odor and prevent irritation. If your dog was sprayed, keep them outside if you can so you don’t share that skunk perfume with them. Check their eyes, and if they were sprayed in the face, flush them gently with cool water or saline. Don't get them wet with plain water, because that's like trying to put out a grease fire with a water gun. Use a skunk odor-neutralizing shampoo that's designed for pets, or if you're feeling adventurous, mix up a homemade solution of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1–2 teaspoons liquid dish soap. Don't store this concoction in a sealed container or you will have a mini-skunk bomb. Avoid the eyes, ears, and mouth, and rinse thoroughly, repeating if needed. Follow with a pet shampoo if desired, because your dog's still a stinker, but at least they'll smell like a clean stinker. Contact your veterinarian if your dog has red, painful, or squinting eyes after being sprayed, or if they're vomiting, lethargic, having trouble breathing, or acting strangely. If your dog only encountered a skunk but wasn't sprayed, call them away calmly and leash them, check for any bites or scratches, and monitor them for any injuries or unusual behavior. Keep them up to date on their rabies vaccinations, and discuss any concerns with your veterinarian. To try to prevent skunk encounters, keep dogs on a leash if you’re inclined to take walks at dawn or dusk when skunks are most active, secure your garbage cans, and remove any food sources that may attract wildlife. Supervise your pets when they're outside, especially in areas where skunks are common, because you really don't want to have to deal with a stinky dog!
