Abby presented with significant facial swelling and had a visible rattlesnake bite wound. Rattlesnake bites are common in Pueblo and the surrounding areas from spring to fall. Symptoms can occur within 30 minutes after the bite and you will commonly see an open wound from the bite, significant swelling and pain. Symptoms that may occur later include necrosis/tissue sloughing and infection. Sudden death is possible with rattlesnake bites, especially with bites that have more venom toxin. Diagnosis can be made with physical exam and bloodwork. It is imperative to get your pet seen as soon as possible after a rattlesnake bite to receive treatment with antivenin and supportive care.

Abby was hospitalized for treatment and is now at home and recovering well.

For dogs, there is a rattlesnake vaccine (conditional USDA license). The rattlesnake vaccine is known to have vaccine reactions and needs to be discussed with your veterinarian before beginning the vaccine series. There’s also rattlesnake aversion training programs available Please contact your veterinarian about prevention and seek emergency care if your pet has been bitten by a rattlesnake.
