Oswald wants you know that no one can feel it for you! Feel the rain on your antlers!

As you might be able to see, our male elk, Oswald, has a new set of antlers coming in! Every year elk shed their antlers and regrow them. Antlers typically start to come in around late March to early April. The new set is covered in skin with numerous blood vessels referred to as "velvet." This velvet supplies nutrients and helps promote healthy growth. Incredibly, antlers can grow up to one inch a day! So far, Oswald looks to be growing an impressive set. Stay tuned for updates as they continue to develope.

Last week was our first week of Zoo Camp, and we had the privilege of kicking things off with our Animal Tales campers. This group of 1st and 2nd graders explored the worlds of classic animal-themed stories, expressed their creativity through various crafts, and filled their own special journals with poetry, drawings, and their very own animal-centred stories. The week ultimately concluded with a group story time where each camper got the chance to read their story to the class. And as a group project, the class wrote a Pueblo Zoo poem together. Here it is in all its glory:

The Penguin looks like it's wearing a suit!

The otters are cute!

The Camel has two humps.

And our kangaroo jumps!

The Zebras have stripes.

We got frogs of all types!

Our red pandas can climb!

Check out our two new ones next time!

Our tamarins monkeys are hugging.

Oh, look, the birds are flying!

It's Summer camp time!

And our campers can rhyme!

We will be gathering signatures for our petition until this Sunday, June 14th! If you'd like to stop by and sign, we will have people on grounds weekdays, 9 AM - 5 PM, and weekends, 10 AM - 2 PM.

We will also be joining The Food Truck Union this Friday from 11:20 AM to 1:30 PM. We're so grateful for them and their support. Please stop by Mineral Palace Park for lunch and to sign our petition. Zoo staff will be located at the hot pink table with the white tent!

To say we have been humbled by the community support and outreach is an understatement. Thank you to everyone who has signed, provided thoughtful feedback, and shared our messages with their friends and family. We wouldn't be able to do this without you!

We are excited to announce that both Joy and Mr. Darcy, our two new red pandas, have been let out onto exhibit! Joy was the first to explore her new space by climbing, sniffing, and tasting—a full tactile experience. Mr. Darcy chose to stay inside, but we're happy to say both will now have full access to the exhibit.

Be sure to stop by the zoo and say hi to our two new friends!

Today is , and besides being spicy kitties, both Khari and Tai Chi are sure to give you reasons not to hug.

Khari, seen here rolling around looking adorable, is actually exhibiting a natural behaviour of masking his scent with…p**p! Specifically zebra p**p gathered from our very own zebras here on the grounds. Lions do this naturally to hide their scent from prey. So yeah, it is safe to say we'll be skipping the hug.

Tai Chi, shown in the video searching for food through repurposed firehose, is mostly just judgey. And don't you want your hugs to be reciprocated?

Do you know a 5th or 6th grader that loves animals and wants to help save them from extinction? With our summer camp Zookeepers To The Rescue, campers will go behind the scenes to explore what a real zookeeper’s day looks like and how zoos play a vital role in conservation through the Save Animals From Extinction (S.A.F.E.) program.
