Animal Aid of Portland is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue and welfare organization, passionately serving animals and the people they love since 1969.

We operate a free-roam shelter for cats; a foster program for dogs and cats; It Takes a Pack, a community-driven animal care supply sharing initiative; and the Animal Aid Cares Fund, a partnership with veterinarians, trainers, and behaviorists in Portland to provide financial assistance for urgent medical and behavioral care. We are continuing to ask that all visitors, including children, wear a mask at all times while inside (no face shields or neck gaiters, please). GIVE!GUIDE STARTS TODAY!

Meet Fergus, our big-hearted mascot for this year’s campaign! Fergus is a big guy with a BIG personality. He’s chatty, loves attention, adores lap time and brushing, and is happiest tucked into a cozy blanket. He loves sunbeams, blanket caves, and launching himself into the air to catch a wand toy. And when he’s extra happy, he sometimes drools a little.

Like some of us, Fergus has a few quirks! He has a habit of chewing and swallowing things he shouldn’t, so keeping him safe takes some extra attention and a carefully cat-proofed space.

We’re making Fergus our little mascot for Give!Guide this year, and he’s helping us kick things off with a message that means so much to us: Every Paw Counts .

WE’RE BACK FOR GIVE!GUIDE 2026 🐾

Another year, another year that Animal Aid is part of Willamette Week’s G!veGuide. We are happy to be a part of this community once again, showing up for the animals who make Animal Aid what it is.

G!veGuide officially kicks off November 1 and runs through the end of the year. Our theme this year is Every Paw Counts, because every animal has a story, every paw deserves care, and every bit of our community support makes a difference. Things kick off this Sunday and we can’t wait to bring you along for some stories over the past year, familiar furry faces, and some incentives from local partners.

Join us on Sunday, November 8th, for a cozy workshop while raising funds for Animal Aid PDX during Give!Guide!
There will also be time to visit our adoptable kitties!

We’ll have two adorable projects to choose from depending on your crochet experience. Whether you’re picking up a hook for the first time or already know your way around a pattern, there’s something for everyone,

LEO!

Helloooo from the clouds! My name is Leo, and I’m the goofiest, happiest pal to a future lucky human.
I’m the most stereotypical Pomeranian in every way except size. I’m intelligent, energetic, sassy, and an armful of dog. I love all the joys that life has to offer – walks, car rides, hikes, long naps, off leash adventures with a pack, bike rides (I ride in a backpack!), obedience and trick training, camping, playing with all my dogs friends, and much more!

Like the average Pom, I can be pretty nervous at first and need someone patient who will let me warm up at my own pace. I don’t like when strangers reach their hands straight at me without letting me get to know them first. I’m not a fan of young kids that are inexperienced with dogs and need either an adult-only home or a home with chill older kids. I tend to bark at kids, cats, squirrels, and some dogs on leash when outside. I respond really well to positive reinforcement training and hope to continue that to decrease my stress and reactions.
My general anxiety also means that alone time stresses me out and would need someone who is understanding of separation anxiety. I’m not super clingy when you’re home, but I can only handle about 4 hours of alone time during the day and even less later at night. I’ve come a long way with training and medication, but minimal alone time is still a must. I’m not destructive or harmful to myself, but I do bark during separation anxiety episodes. It might be hard for me to live with shared walls.
I would LOVE to have at least one other dog at home. In fact, I probably need a dog buddy. This could significantly decrease my anxiety both when alone and throughout the day. Playing with dogs is my favorite thing ever. I board with a group of dogs and go on pack adventures regularly, and the people taking care of me say I’m at my most relaxed and easy going when surrounded by other dogs. A major plus would be a fenced yard for me to play with my dog siblings all day.
In the right home environment, I will be the most loyal, snuggly friend for life. Patience and enrichment is a must, but it will be so rewarded.

October is black cat awareness month 🐈‍⬛🖤

Two black kittens currently have adoption pending, but we still have a couple black cats still looking for their forever homes. One of these cats is Jinx, a young black cat that is full of energy and likes to talk a lot. He was found in a carrier outside of the county shelter before coming to us. Jinx is looking for a home where he could ideally be the only cat, as he can play hard.
