Bella’s glow-up is one we had to share 💙🐾

When Bella first came to our Internal Medicine team, she was nearly hairless and battling calcinosis cutis, a condition that caused her skin to develop hard, crusted lesions.

With her owner’s incredible dedication at home and Bella’s positive response to treatment, she’s made an amazing transformation — she truly looks like a new dog!

Scooter’s story is one worth celebrating 🎓

Diagnosed with pulmonary carcinoma in November of 2025, Scooter faced every challenge with courage (and plenty of tail wags). After completing all six of his chemotherapy treatments, he officially graduated—cap and all—from IV chemotherapy.

His journey wouldn’t be possible without his incredibly devoted family, who traveled 5 hours from New York and stayed overnight in Pittsburgh before every single treatment to make sure Scooter got the care he needed.

We’re so proud of this sweet, resilient boy and honored to have been part of his journey. Join us in congratulating Scooter on this milestone. 💛

A disease like Parvovirus in dogs is highly contagious and can have deadly consequences. Here’s what you need to know:

🐩 Parvovirus attacks the gastrointestinal tract
💩 The main way that dogs contract Parvovirus is through the f***s (stool) and vomit of infected dogs
🐶 Parvovirus can affect puppies too young to be vaccinated, puppies within their vaccination course, and unvaccinated adult dogs. Flies and other vectors can also carry the virus from yard to yard.
🐕‍ Vaccinating your pet is the only way to protect them from the disease

Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and sometimes bloating, fever or low body temperature (hypothermia), vomiting, and severe (often bloody) diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

If your dog exhibits symptoms of parvovirus, take them to your nearest veterinarian for immediate testing. Or you can call Avets at 412-373-4200. We are open 24/7/365. The quicker they can be treated, the better the chance of recovery!

The hip joint normally functions as a ball and socket but, in dogs with hip dysplasia (a skeletal disorder), the ball and socket do not fit properly, which results in the joint rubbing and grinding. Since the bones of the joint don't line up correctly, the joint cartilage is subjected to abnormal wear and tear. Over time, this wear and tear can result in pain and arthritis. This disorder is most often hereditary, but can also be caused by traumatic injury.

Signs of hip dysplasia can include:
🐕 Weakness in the hind legs
🐕 Limping, wobbling
🐕 Walking with a “bunny-hop” gait
🐕 Reluctance to rise from a sitting or lying position
🐕 Lameness, which may be mild, moderate, or severe, and is worse after exercise
🐕 Loose joint, stiffness of the joint, and a grating sound during full extension and bending of the joint

If your dog is exhibiting any of these signs, talk to us about diagnostics, pain management, supplements, and surgical options. Early detection and treatment can make a world of difference. ❤️
