Thanksgiving pet safety 101—what NOT to feed your furry friend. 🦃 🐾

Foods to keep away from pets:
* Turkey bones – splinter easily and can cause choking, intestinal blockages, or tears.
* Fatty skin & drippings – can trigger pancreatitis.
* Gravy – often high in fat and salt.
* Stuffing – usually contains onions, garlic, leeks, or scallions, all toxic to pets.
* Mashed potatoes – may contain butter, cream, garlic, or chives.
* Grapes & raisins – can cause kidney failure in dogs.
* Chocolate & desserts – toxic to both dogs and cats, especially dark chocolate and baked goods with xylitol (a sugar substitute).
* Yeast dough – can expand in the stomach, causing bloating or alcohol poisoning.

Contact Avets at (412) 373-4200 if your pet:
* Vomits repeatedly
* Has diarrhea or won’t eat
* Appears bloated or in pain
* Acts lethargic or disoriented
* Ingests chocolate, xylitol, grapes, raisins, alcohol, or bones

We're open 24/7/365.

November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

A cancer diagnosis for your pet can be scary at first. It's important to remember that treatment options are available for pets with cancer, and they can improve the quality and length of your pet's life. The treatments available for pets with cancer are similar to those for humans - including surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care.

Signs to watch for:
• Unusual lumps or bumps
• Sudden weight loss
• Changes in appetite or behavior
• Wounds that won’t heal

Regular wellness exams and knowing what to look for can make all the difference. 💛 This month, let’s raise awareness, support pet families facing cancer, and honor the fighters and survivors.

November is National Senior Pet Month! 🐶🐱

It's the perfect time to celebrate our wise, whiskered companions and give them the extra TLC they deserve.

Did you know?
🦴 Senior pets are more prone to arthritis, dental disease, and weight gain.
🧠 Regular vet check-ups with your primary care veterinarian can help catch early signs of age-related issues.
🍽️ Diet and exercise routines often need adjusting as pets age.

Let's keep our golden oldies happy and healthy—because love only grows stronger with age. 💓

Meet Zeke, a 6-year-old feline fighting large cell lymphoma. Since his diagnosis in March, Zeke has been undergoing the CHOP chemotherapy protocol. We're thrilled to announce that he will be completing his treatments this month!
In the oncology department, about 21% of our patients are cats. What makes Zeke special is his gentle spirit – he purrs through every visit, even during his chemotherapy treatments, bringing calm and happiness to everyone around him.

Zeke’s family has remained a constant source of love and support, showing just how powerful dedication can be in the healing process. He has been thoroughly pampered — treated to an ever-changing menu of delicious foods and showered with affection. Thanks to their efforts- he’s truly thriving. Keep purring, Zeke – we’re all cheering you on! 💛

Tomatoes are a popular garden crop this time of year. However, green tomatoes contain solanine which can put our pets at risk. 🍅 In most cases, we can see gastrointestinal irritation even with a small amount ingested.

Symptoms with larger ingestions can include: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, confusion, dilated pupils, depression, and increased heart rate.

If you suspect your pet has consumed green tomatoes, immediately contact Avets at 412-373-4200. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
