Thanks Andrew Gager for coming by today and giving Wanda her first dental float! This girl hasn’t even been out of holding a month and she leads, loads, ties, stands to have her feet done, has been written, and was great for her dental visit today. She is one special wonder donkey! We cannot thank Andy enough for how patient he is with our horses. Especially our formerly wild mustangs and b***os. 10/10 recommend to anyone looking for an equine dentist!

Every horse is different. Some need more calories, some need cool energy, some need carbs for anaerobic energy use, some are easy keepers and need less, some need soaked feed, some won’t eat soaked feed. Some like to soak their own feed and dunk from water bucket to feed tub. And that’s just the start of creating a diet for a horse. With a degree in equine science and advanced courses in nutrition, we at ReeLee customize the diet for each individual horse. That means we are not brand snobs, we find what works for each horse. And to top it off, some home grown carrots as a topper. Sometimes that can be lettuce, or sweet potatoes, or another healthy treat. Did I mention that we garden in our own compost. So talk about coming full circle!

Sometimes the rehab horses need a little help from a friend… Snow Lake arrived yesterday to begin a long rehab journey with us. The adjustment from track to farm is different for each horse, but for a fit racehorse that is required to be on stall rest, sometimes that transition can be extra difficult. They go from a structured exercise routine, high energy feed, and a fast paced environment, to having extremely limited activity. New horses, horses coming and going in the barn through the day, new sights and sounds, and so much more. Sometimes this can be quite a lot for them to mentally handle. Additionally, they do not understand why it is happening, or that staying quiet and calm is vital to their successful recovery. Sedation is one way to achieve this, and in some cases necessary. Sometimes just in the initial stages of rehab, sometimes for longer periods. Sometimes, they just need support from a friend with calm and cool energy. Sometimes a friendly neighbor is enough, but for many being able to have contact and some level of socialization with another animal is necessary. Sometimes we use our goats for this job. Which can be dependent upon if the horse is able to adjust to them milling around the stall with them and around their legs. But now that we have Wanda the Wonder Donkey, we have an equid option for our most sensitive rehab patients. (We make sure that any time we have animals share a space they are properly introduced, and this is also our foaling stall which is larger than a standard stall.) Thanks Wanda!

What better way to start the summer than with two fresh from holding wild horse and b***o! We went to the Anneville BLM Adoption event today, and took these two girls back to the farm. The yearling filly, and her student trainer are piloting our junior mustang training program. We look forward to sharing their progress! The b***o is a new permanent member of the ReeLee family. She is 12 years old, from Havasu Arizona, and was captured last August. Our big question for her now… is she pregnant? What do you all think? ***o

This amazing Rescue gave us our boy Donut. They experienced every barn owner’s worst nightmare this morning. The loss of animals is tragic. But the treatment of those in critical care, as well as the continued care of those in the rescue is going to take a village while things are rebuilt and food and supplies restocked. Any donation makes a difference. https://gofund.me/f0da0712
