Philadelphia Zoo

Philadelphia Zoo Philadelphia Zoo is home to 1,900 animals, many rare and endangered. Check our website for hours.

Situated on 42 acres of beautiful gardens, the Philadelphia Zoo is home to nearly 1,700 animals, many rare and endangered. Gorillas, African lions, Amur tigers, a white rhino, giraffes and more call this oasis home. As Philadelphia’s leading cultural destination the Zoo boasts award-winning exhibits such as Zoo360, KidZooU, Big Cats Falls, McNeil Avian Center, and PECO Primate Reserve. Zoo360 is a

one of a kind animal exploration system that allows small primates, great apes, big cats and now meerkats to travel and discover the Zoo’ s campus. KidZooU: Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Faris Family Education Center offers displays and hands-on learning along with and rare and unusual goats, sheep, chickens, mini horses and ducks for toddlers to tweens. KidZooU changes the Zoo experience for both animals and guests alike. The outdoor exhibit area includes a 400-foot trail for rare sheep and goats, and a “goat bridge” built above the KidZooU entrance. While the goats scale their own supersize tower, children can climb a parallel structure. Indoors, families will marvel at a world teeming with coral reef fish, colorful parakeets, desert ants, and other extraordinary animals. Interactive exhibits show visitors how saving energy and recycling can help save wildlife. By connecting people with wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats. As the region’s leading family destination, the Zoo welcomed more than 1.2 million visitors last year and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Domestic cat parents know this face all too well 😂

This face is called the flehmen response, or we sometimes call it "stink face," and Yuki the snow leopard is demonstrating it perfectly. This behavior allows cats to analyze the different smells and pheromones in their environment through a special scent organ in the roof of their mouths!

🌿 Ever wonder where we get the browse that we feed many of our animals at the Zoo?

We team up with our pals at PECO! Between June and September, PECO provides nearly a ton of leaves, twigs, and branches from their preventative tree-trimming program and donates them to the Zoo—feeding about 80 of our different animal species! Thank you for another amazing season!

There's a new little guy that has hatched behind-the-scenes in the Reptile & Amphibian House! 🐊 Take a look at this baby West African dwarf crocodile feasting on shrimp from his animal care specialist. As the world's smallest crocodile species, this little one will only grow to be about 6 feet long like its parents, Madini and Hasani (visit them at their habitat across from the giant tortoises!). This species is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and are threatened by hunting.

We're celebrating Día de los Mu***os with our own Beloved Animal Ofrenda, an altar that honors and cherishes the memories of deceased animal companions of Philadelphia Zoo and our staff.

Our Beloved Animal Ofrenda— located in the entrance to Big Cat Falls— features pictures, favorite foods, toys, and other meaningful items, creating a space to express grief and highlight the unique bond between humans and animals. This altar also includes traditional items such as marigolds, rock salt, candles, water, and sugar skulls (calavera).

We welcome all our guests to contribute to our ofrenda by adding a pets name to the space provided surrounding the altar! 💐
