This week is National Pet ID Week!

🐾 Why Pet IDs Are So Important: A Small Tag That Makes a Big Difference

Imagine if your pet slipped out the front door—maybe they chased a squirrel, got spooked by thunder, or just got a little too curious. It’s a scenario no pet parent wants to face. Now picture the panic slowly turning into relief... because your pet was wearing an ID and a good Samaritan was able to call you right away!

That tiny tag? It can make a HUGE difference!

What Is a Pet ID, Really?

A pet ID is any form of identification your pet wears that includes your contact information—typically a tag attached to their collar. It can also mean a microchip, which is a small implant beneath your pet's skin that can be scanned at most shelters and vet clinics.

Why Pet IDs Matter

1. 1 in 3 Pets Will Get Lost
That’s a sobering stat, but it’s true. According to the American Humane Association, about one in three pets will become lost at some point in their lives. And without any ID, the odds of being reunited drop drastically.

2. Quick, Visible Contact Info
A tag on your pet’s collar is the fastest way for someone to reach you if they find your pet. No waiting at shelters, no scanning—just a quick call and you’re on your way to a reunion.

3. Microchips Add a Layer of Security
Collars can come off. That’s where microchips shine. They’re a permanent backup that can’t be lost, stolen, or damaged. Just make sure the chip is registered and your contact info is kept up to date.

4. Peace of Mind for You
Knowing that your pet has a way to get home if they’re ever lost gives you peace of mind. It’s a small step that brings big comfort.

What Should Be on a Pet ID Tag?

Your pet’s name
Your phone number (preferably cell)
Optional: Your address or town
Optional: A message like “Needs medication” or “Microchipped”

Tips for Keeping Pet IDs Effective

✔ Check tags regularly for wear and tear.
✔ Update info anytime you move or change phone numbers.
✔ If your pet is microchipped, make sure the info is current in the registry.
✔ Consider QR code tags that link to detailed pet profiles.

It’s easy to think “my pet never runs off” or “they always stay in the yard”—until they don’t. Accidents happen. Particularly this time of year with landscapers coming and going, accidents happen. But when your pet is wearing ID, a happy ending is much more likely.

So this week, please take a moment to check your pet’s tags. Is the info readable and current? Are they microchipped? If not, maybe it’s time to consider it.

A small tag can make for a quick reunion!

Our Story

The Pet Nanny is an 'in your home' pet sitting and dog walking service located in Lower Bucks County. We provide care for your pet while you are away on vacation, working for the day or on a business trip. We are also here in case of an emergency such as a hospital stay. We have cat care specialists, dog walkers and parrot care specialists on our team. We also care for your small and furry friends such as guinea pigs and chinchillas.

Started in 2010 by a former vet tech and wildlife tech, Tess has an extensive background working with felines and has studied feline behavior, as well as experience working with avians, from song birds to raptors. She has also rescued senior special needs dogs and enjoys working with her client’s senior dogs.

The Pet Nanny also provides daily dog walking and has four walkers available Monday - Friday between 11-2 to give your dog a mid day potty break, some exercise or mainly check in if you have a senior or special needs dog. We can also add additional visits during the day for new puppies who are potty training. All walkers are fully insured and bonded and are experienced caring for a wide variety of breeds.
