As business owners, one of the things Rody and I enjoy most is driving around the property and seeing people everywhere we turn.

A trainer working a dog. Puppies being socialized. Staff caring for dogs, helping clients, cleaning kennels, maintaining the property, and taking pride in the countless details that keep everything moving forward.

Several team members were hard at work behind the scenes making sure this place continues to look and operate the way it does.

When we think back to where Best Retrievers started in 2006, it’s hard not to be grateful. What began as a dream has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined, and that’s because of the incredible people who pour their hearts into this place every day.

POTTY TRAINING TIPS 🐾

One of the biggest mistakes puppy owners make is expecting potty training to happen on its own. Successful potty training isn’t about luck. It’s about consistency, timing, and creating opportunities for your puppy to succeed.

A properly sized crate can make a huge difference. Your puppy should have enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not enough room to use one end as a bathroom and sleep in the other. As your puppy grows, the crate can grow with them.

Another key is management. Every time your puppy wakes up, eats, drinks, plays, or comes out of the crate, take them directly outside. Don’t give them the opportunity to have an accident on the way. For young puppies, pick them up and carry them straight to the grass.

One of the most important things to understand is timing. Dogs have about 1.3 seconds to connect a consequence to a behavior. If you don’t catch them in the act, the teaching moment is gone. Finding a puddle ten minutes later and reacting to it doesn’t help your puppy understand what happened. Instead, learn to recognize the signs and intervene quickly.

Watch for sniffing, circling, whining, pacing, suddenly wandering away, or heading toward a corner. These are often your puppy’s way of saying they need to go.

If you catch your puppy starting to go inside, calmly and quickly pick them up and carry them outside. Wait until they finish the job in the correct spot, then make it a celebration. Praise them, pet them, love on them, and let them know they made the right choice. The clearer you are when they succeed, the faster they learn.

Potty training isn’t really about correcting mistakes. It’s about helping your puppy understand what success looks like.

Be patient. Be consistent. Stay ahead of the accidents whenever possible.

A little extra effort today creates good habits that can last a lifetime.

NOT ASKED FREQUENTLY ENOUGH…

If you’re considering a training program for your dog, ask for a tour. Ask to walk through the kennel. Ask to watch dogs working. Ask questions. Lots of questions.

Most people know how to evaluate a building, an office, or a website. Very few people know how to evaluate the dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs are often the most important part.

When you’re watching dogs at a training facility, don’t look for perfection. Look for confidence, enthusiasm, understanding, and respect. Watch how the dogs interact with the trainers. Do they seem excited about the opportunity to come out and train? Do they appear comfortable around the people caring for them? Do they look engaged and confident in what they’re doing?

At the same time, pay attention to what may be concerning. Do dogs consistently move away from staff? Do they appear hand-shy or uncomfortable being touched? Do they seem confused rather than understanding? Do they appear to be waiting on pressure instead of understanding what is being asked of them?

One dog may simply be having a bad day. A pattern across many dogs tells a much bigger story. Dogs are constantly communicating. The question is whether we know how to read what they’re saying.

A respectful dog should not be fearful. A confident dog should not be out of control. The goal is a dog that understands, trusts, and enjoys the learning process.

Every dog owner should know how to recognize quality training when they see it. The more we learn to read dog behavior, the better decisions we can make for our dogs.

The trainer can tell you about their program. The dogs will show you the results.

UPDATE! Both Girls are home! Thanks for sharing!! Now let’s help their brother find his!!

💛 These little girls are officially 7 weeks old and looking for their forever homes! 💛 (they have a black brother available too!!)

Earlier this year, SRSC Seaside’s Saint Benedict MH QAA “Pope” came out strong on the Super Retriever Series circuit and quickly put himself in the Team of the Year conversation.

Then everything changed.

After one of the events, Pope came up lame and was diagnosed with a partially torn ACL.

On April 16, we made the decision to go ahead with surgery so he would have the best chance possible to recover and be ready for the fall. Since then, life has looked very different for a dog who loves to compete. Short leash walks, crate rest, and a lot of patience.

A few days ago, Pope got the green light to start swimming again, and this sunset swim was his first step back.

The road isn’t over, but we’re thankful for every milestone along the way. And somehow, even after missing several Super Retriever Series events during recovery, Pope is still sitting in the Team of the Year lead. 💛🐾

A special thank you to Carol Huddleston for always putting Pope first and supporting every decision that gives him the best opportunity for a long, successful, and happy career. 💛🐾
