Our friend Gunner joined us for lessons due to an unfortunate incident with a youngster. This lively Weimaraner is a ball of energy and extremely food driven. We worked to slow down his anticipation and calm down his excitement. Through impulse control drills and obedience, we are proud to announce that Gunner had a really good, calm family gathering this past weekend. Mom was able to utilize the skills they learned together to let him adjust to people, work through his excitement, and then calmly greet and interact with everyone.

Gunner! We are so very proud of your hard work!

Mom! Keep it up! Your dedication to Gunner is amazing and we love it!

As we head into the New Year, we want to take a moment to highlight two of our Back2Basics Dog Training alumni.

It is moments like this that we live for! This is why we do what we do!

Honey and Waffles, both rescues, came to us for training a few years back.

Honey came first! A small shepherd mix, she was a tough nut to crack!!! It was clear Honey was used to living life on her terms! When she didn’t agree with me, she had no problem giving me the doggie middle finger and side eye. In fact, it wasn’t even a side eye it was a full on glare!!!! It took weeks to gain not only her trust, but her respect. It was a constant battle of the wills. But, she took the knowledge, often times begrudgingly. Honey lived to please herself, first, humans second.

Waffles, well, Waffles couldn’t be more different! A Belgian Malinois, she was eager to please. She preferred affection and approval! She was sweet and loving and beyond affectionate.

Fast forward three years… when I hear the Bates girls are coming, I’m beyond excited. Honey and Waffles hit the jackpot with their family. They took their investment into dog training seriously and kept reinvesting with time, energy, and love.

Honey has become one of my absolute favorite kiddos. She has changed so much! She is much more affectionate, extremely obedient, and beyond loyal. Anyone that knows me know that I love a confident dog, and Honey, she is just that!

Waffles is still her sweet self! She is well behaved and thriving! I adore her beyond measure!

As you can see in the photos, these two girls are so well behaved that they go everywhere with their Mom and Dad.

Honey and Waffles are proof that training is valuable.

If you’ve gotten a Christmas pup or even a grown dog, let Back2Basics Dog Training, LLC take care of your obedience needs! We love building our dogs into Honey and Waffles!

Great job, Mom and Dad! Not only do you have two well behaved girls, you are giving them their best life!

Keep those stars shining bright, Ladies!

You truly make Ms. Gabby proud!!!! t

If you’ve ever wondered if dog training is easy, I’m about to give you a little insight.

Yogi joined us almost five weeks ago. He was a veterinarian referral due to anxiety and stress. His response to pressure is/was a series of specific tics and very loud, non stop, barking.

To teach him positive engagement and how to work with pressure, I decided to teach him Touch. This drill can normally be taught in a day, two at most. It’s a simple drill of touching nose to hand, followed by reward and praise.

Due to Yogi’s extreme impatience and refusal to work with pressure, this drill took almost two weeks. In the beginning, he would bark and run away, grab his toy, then go into scratching and stress rolls.

For Yogi, pressure comes from a few different places. First and foremost, it comes from his collar. Corrections have become an anticipated event. He begins to anticipate correction with any interaction and immediately goes to scratching and licking as a form of self soothing.

Pressure also comes from close quarters instructions. Yogi learned early on that refusal to take directions would result in correction. His response is to show extreme impatience and begin to bark uncontrollably.

Pressure also comes from being placed in a grey area. Unfortunately, Yogi’s behaviors often time place him in a grey area. Dogs prefer clear cut, black and white, directions. But. Because of years of conditioned responses to stress, Yogi’s mind is in a constant state of chaos.

Teaching Touch meant patience. LOT AND LOTS OF PATIENCE. It meant starting one day, then two or three days off for him to decompress the stress. Then. Back at it. Working in very small, short bursts. And then, stopping when the stress was too much. Ensuring a positive session was a little difficult at times.

But! Yogi persevered!

You can see in the video he knows what is expected of him. His mind is calm and the expectation is clear cut and in black and white.

I couldn’t be more proud of Yogi. He’s worked really hard to achieve this goal.

He’s now moving onto article recovery, which will utilize his hunt drive (very strong) and encourage him to keep a clear mind.

Our young friend, Sirius, went home earlier this week!

Almost immediately, he went to work with Mom to the clinic. He worked really hard on kennels manners and staying on a sit or down with the door open, until released. He showed off his hard work by sticking to his training foundation at work!

He’s been on many public adventures and has received multiple comments on his exquisite behavior.

Sirius also came to us for jumping! He’s a very social butterfly! Mom texted to say he’s maintained a beautiful sit heel when people approach them! He isn’t trying to jump on anyone, and, is instead, relying on his foundation!

Sirius is a beautiful boy and he’s a hard one not to look at! To know he is applying his training and working through the pressure means the world to us!!!!

Great work, Sirius! Keep it up!!!!
