Being weather aware in Oklahoma can mean so many things.

This heat is a friend to no one, especially our pets!

Here are a few ways to help keep them safe this summer:

☀️ Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
⏰ Set timers when you let your dog out during the day.
🐾 Check the pavement before heading outside. If it's too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your pet's paws.
💧 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🌳 Make sure outdoor pets have access to shade and water.
🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside a car can become deadly in a matter of minutes.
🏊 Supervise pets around pools and lakes, and make sure they have a way to safely get out of the water.

If your pet is experiencing any signs of heat stroke, they need to bee cared for right away.

Everyone, welcome Oakley. Our new HR “assistant”! 💙

Oakley is a French Bulldog puppy with a full-time job of stealing hearts around the office.

His daily routine consists of:
🤼 Play wrestling with his buddy, Tank
💤 Going full speed for about 30 minutes... then crashing for a well-earned nap
❤️ Snuggling up with his favorite people (he especially loves resting his head on your arm or shoulder!)

We're pretty sure his productivity mostly consists of boosting morale and honestly, we'd say he's exceeding expectations. 😉

Meet Mabel! 💙

Mabel came to see us after experiencing some vomiting and diarrhea. While she may not look thrilled about her visit, she quickly became a favorite around the hospital. She received plenty of snuggles and attention from everyone who met her. We think she secretly loved every minute of it. 😉

Vomiting and diarrhea can happen for many reasons, from simple stomach upset to more serious illnesses. While an occasional upset stomach may resolve on its own, repeated vomiting or diarrhea can quickly lead to dehydration, especially in puppies, kittens, senior pets, and smaller animals.

It's time to give your veterinarian a call if your pet:
🐾 Vomits multiple times in a day
🐾 Has persistent diarrhea
🐾 Has blood in their vomit or stool
🐾 Becomes lethargic or won't eat
🐾 Shows signs of abdominal pain
🐾 Can't keep food or water down

Early treatment can help your pet feel better sooner and may prevent a minor problem from becoming a major one.

Happy Fourth of July from Neel Veterinary Hospital! 🇺🇸🐾

We hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday. As the fireworks get started tonight, don’t forget that the “big booms” can be scary for many pets.

A few quick reminders:
• Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks
• Take potty breaks before the noise starts
• Make sure collars, tags, and microchip information are up to date
• Set up a quiet, comfortable space with familiar bedding and white noise
• Give prescribed anxiety medications as directed, ideally before your pet is already panicking
• Keep cookout foods, alcohol, trash, bones, skewers, corn cobs, chocolate, and xylitol away from pets

If your pet gets injured, eats som**hing they shouldn’t, escapes, or needs us in any way, we’re here.

A few reminders before the holiday:

Opal would like everyone to know she is absolutely not a dog… she is clearly a chair-sized house guest. 😂

A couple of days before this photo, Opal had emergency surgery for GDV: gastric dilatation-volvulus, also known as bloat and/or a twisted stomach.

When she seemed to not be feeling well, her family did exactly the right thing and had her checked right away.

Thankfully, this time, Opal was just a very gassy girl.

But here’s the important part: GDV is a true emergency, and it can be hard to tell “just gas” from som**hing life-threatening without veterinary care.

GDV happens when the stomach fills with gas and may twist on itself. It is most common in large, deep-chested dogs like Great Danes, but any dog can be affected.

Food bloat happens when the stomach becomes overly full/distended with food. While food bloat may not involve a twist, it can still be uncomfortable, risky, and needs veterinary assessment.

Signs to watch for:
• Swollen or tight abdomen
• Retching or trying to vomit with little/no production
• Drooling
• Restlessness or pacing
• Signs of pain or distress
• Weakness, collapse, or trouble breathing

If you ever suspect bloat/GDV, please do not wait to see if it passes. Fast treatment can make a huge difference.

For high-risk breeds, talk with your veterinarian about prevention options, including gastropexy, which can help prevent the stomach from twisting.

We’re so proud of you Dash!
It was an absolute privilege to care for this handsome hero last night!

On June 28th, K9 Dash showed everyone exactly what it means to be a dedicated partner protecting Oklahoma City.

Our officers had tracked down a stolen vehicle with the driver still inside near SE 19th St. and S. Santa Fe Ave. The suspect initially got out of the truck, but then jumped back inside to flee. That’s when Sgt. Michael Moore deployed K9 Dash. Dash launched into action and fiercely engaged the suspect right in the driver's seat.

Talk about incredible determination—Dash refused to let go, even as the suspect hit the gas and took off. Dash was dragged a significant distance down the road before he finally broke his grip. Dash's bravery disrupted the getaway, and ended with the suspect in handcuffs and a bag of m**h recovered from the scene.

Sgt. Moore immediately rushed his partner to an emergency vet clinic. Dash was treated for some road rash on his paws, but he's expected to make a full recovery!

The New World Screwworm has been gaining attention recently due to its re-emergence in North America. Here's what you need to know.

New World screwworms are fly larvae that can infest open wounds or body openings and feed on living tissue. Pets, livestock, wildlife, and, rarely, people can be affected.

What to Watch for:
• Wounds that are not healing or are getting larger
• Foul-smelling drainage from a wound
• Visible larvae/maggots or eggs near a wound
• Excessive licking, chewing, or irritation at one area
• Pain, swelling, lethargy, or decreased appetite

Check pets regularly for cuts, scrapes, tick bites, surgical sites, hot spots, or any wound that looks irritated. Keep wounds clean, protected, and monitored, and contact your veterinarian if a wound worsens or develops an odor or discharge.

If you suspect screwworm, do not attempt to treat it at home or throw larvae/eggs in the trash.
These cases need veterinary care and must be reported so proper identification and control steps can be taken.

Treatment may include removal of larvae, wound care, pain control, antibiotics/supportive care, and parasite treatment when appropriate.
Please do not apply livestock fly sprays, pyrethrin/pyrethroid products, ivermectin, or other medications to your pet unless specifically directed by a veterinarian. Some products used for large animals can be unsafe for dogs and cats.

If you notice a suspicious wound or possible larvae, call your veterinarian right away.
