Public Service Announcement
If you come across a deceased animal on a city street, please take a moment to report it. Contact the local non-emergency police number for the city you are in and request an animal welfare pickup.
For the City of Norman, the non-emergency number is (405) 321-1444.
Animal Welfare personnel will respond to pick up the animal. If the animal is a dog or cat, they will scan for a microchip in an effort to identify the owner. The animal can then be returned to the owner for burial or cremation, or be disposed of appropriately if no owner can be located.
Please don’t be the person who simply drives by and ignores it. If your pet went missing and was later found deceased, wouldn’t you want to know? Wouldn’t you want the opportunity for closure?
This morning, I drove down a street and discovered a deceased cat that appeared to have been there for quite some time. It was heartbreaking and frustrating to realize that numerous people had passed by without reporting it.
As a community, we can do better. A simple phone call can help reunite a family with answers, provide dignity to an animal that has passed, and ensure that our streets remain safe and clean.
If you see something, please report it.
