Meet Casanova. 🦃

Or, as we’ve recently discovered,
the self-appointed Director of Security, Romance, and Lawn Supervision here at SoulSpace Sanctuary.

What most people don’t realize about turkeys is that they are incredibly intelligent, emotional, socially aware beings. They recognize faces, form friendships, communicate constantly through body language and vocalizations, and each one has an entirely distinct personality.

And Casanova?
He has a LOT of personality.

If you’ve ever seen a turkey puff up, fan out their feathers, drag their wings, and strut around like they own the entire property… congratulations. You were witnessing a turkey display called “strutting.”

This behavior can mean:
✨ excitement
✨ confidence
✨ social communication
✨ courtship behavior
✨ or simply:
“Please look at me immediately because I am magnificent.”

Turkeys communicate with their entire bodies.

The floppy piece over their beak is called a snood, and the red skin under their neck is called a wattle. Their head colors actually change depending on mood, stimulation, health, temperature, and emotional state.

🩵 Blue tones often mean they’re relaxed or comfortable.
❤️ Bright reds can happen when they’re excited, stimulated, displaying, or emotionally worked up.
🤍 Pale colors can signal stress or uncertainty.

So yes… turkeys literally wear their feelings on their faces.

Casanova’s bright colors and giant dramatic strut here are signs of a healthy, confident boy who feels safe enough to fully express himself.

Animals become more fully themselves when they finally feel safe.

Turkeys are not “just farm animals.”
They are curious, emotional, relational beings capable of trust, affection, humor, and deep social connection.

And now Casanova gets to live a life where he is valued for who he is — not what humans traditionally see him as.

We’re pretty honored to know him. 🦃🤎
