Nest checking

With new babies we check the nest about every other day. Our mama doesn’t mind at all. We give her oats or Black oils sunflower seeds ( helps also with milk).

What we check for is counting, marking sure tummies are round and getting milk, removing any that have died so they don’t make nest cold or unsanitary

This morning we found a cold one towards the back of the nest box that was cold. Before assuming it’s dead we try to warm it up first.

Reasons for dead kits (baby rabbits): didn’t get food and other larger ones did, something was wrong and mama intentionally set it aside, accidentally got edged out of nest and got too cold and unfed.

This morning all looked normal.

Mama was expected to have babies anytime. This afternoon I came out to check waters and I wanted to put cardboard under the nest boxes for extra insulation if they birthed.

What I saw was mama in the box. At first I thought maybe she was nesting as her fur was pulled. But then as I looked I saw something move under her. She very recently had babies as she was still cleaning them. I just watched to not disturb. Shortly after she jumped out of box and cleaned herself.

How many baby bunnies do you think she had?

Do you see two spotted ones 🤩 Man they will be cute.

Feet

Sizes vary. The largest one is a hind or back feet. The back feet vary depending on size of rabbit when processed and where it is detached.

Rabbit feet are a super nutritious and a fun treat for dogs! They are jam packed with nutrients such as selenium (an antioxidant,) manganese (an anti-inflammatory,) calcium, glucosamine and chondroitin (joint health). Rabbit feet are also low in fat and high in protein.

We can provide you with raw feet and ears too.

Meet Mama or Muffin as we have recently named her.

So far she has been the backbone of Cottontail Treats.

She is due Nov 23rd with another batch. Can’t wait to see what they look like as she was bred with Oreo, who is black and white.

We recently started raising rabbits and fell in love! We thought about what all we could do with our rabbits and quickly Cottontail Treats was born.

We are very small scale with 1 buck and 2 does in our backyard. They are raised with love and care by all of us!
