☀️ As the weather warms up, here is a reminder that leaving a pet in a hot car is extremely dangerous and can quickly become fatal. Did you know that the temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) in just 10 minutes, even with the windows slightly open? On a 70 degree day, a car’s interior can reach over 100 degrees quickly, so you can imagine how hot it gets in a car on a 90 degree day!

It is hard for dogs and cats to cool off because they don’t sweat the same way as humans. They mainly cool themselves by panting and releasing heat through their paw pads, which is ineffective in such hot conditions. Heat strokes are a huge risk in these situations, can happen very quickly, and require immediate medical attention. Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include:

🔥 Excessive panting or drooling
🔥 Elevated heart rate
🔥 Vomiting and/or diarrhea
🔥 Collapsing
🔥 Weakness
🔥 Seizures
🔥 Unconsciousness

One of the best parts of working at a vet clinic is never knowing what you're going to get. One of our assistants rescued an orphaned litter of kittens and brought them in for exams. They are about a week old and doing well so far. We are wishing all the best to these little guys as they grow!😸

A notice from Dr. Hope Poffenbarger:

After 12 wonderful years serving the Linganore community, I will be stepping away from clinical practice as of May 17, 2025. This was a difficult and unexpected decision, and I’m so grateful for your patience and support, especially over the past year.

It has been an honor to care for your pets and be part of your lives. While I’m unsure what the future holds, I’m confident that you’ll continue to receive excellent care from Dr. Shook, Dr. Rara, and our amazing team at Linganore Veterinary Clinic.
