🐾 Introduction to Tracking — Only 7 Spots Left!
Our upcoming Kilted K-9 Introduction to Tracking class is already starting to fill, and we currently have only 7 spots remaining.
We’re planning to begin in October, meeting every other Sunday from 12:30–1:30 PM at Beaver Greens Park.
This class is designed to introduce dogs and handlers to footstep tracking and teach dogs how to work methodically with their nose.
Whether you’re interested in eventually moving into more advanced tracking or you’re simply looking for a fun activity that gives your dog something mentally challenging to do, this is a great place to start.
🐾 All dogs and ages welcome
🐾 Reactive dogs can participate
🐾 Dogs will not be interacting directly with one another
🐾 Six lessons, including our introductory lesson
🐾 Homework and practice between classes
Only 7 spots remain, so if you’ve been thinking about joining us, now is a good time to get your spot reserved.

🐾 INTRODUCTION TO TRACKING — OFFICIAL START DATE! 👃
Kilted K-9’s Introduction to Tracking officially begins:
📅 Sunday, October 4, 2026
🕧 12:30 PM
🐕 Orientation Session — No Dogs
The Orientation Session will run approximately 30–60 minutes and will cover:
• How a dog’s nose works
• Footstep tracking vs. air scenting
• Why we start with footstep tracking
• What to expect throughout the course
• Equipment
• High-value food and food preparation
• Homework and video submissions
• How our training days will operate
• Q&A
Then the following Sunday:
📅 Sunday, October 11
🕧 12:30–1:30 PM
🐾 Class 1 — First hands-on tracking class
After Class 1, the remaining classes will be held every other Sunday from 12:30–1:30 PM, skipping holiday weekends when necessary.
The course includes Orientation plus 6 hands-on tracking classes.
Tracking isn’t only for competition or serious working-dog handlers. Maybe you eventually want to explore IGP-style tracking or more advanced scent work, or maybe you simply want a fun activity that challenges your dog’s brain.
Fun or serious — you decide where you want to take it.
🐾 Puppies are welcome
🐾 Reactive dogs are welcome — no direct dog-to-dog interaction is required
🐾 Dogs must be highly food motivated because food is an important part of teaching beginning footstep tracking
🐾 Students should plan to practice at least 2–3 times per week between classes
Class size is limited to 10 dogs.

Cancellations made at least 7 days before the October 4 Orientation are eligible for a refund. After that, payment is nonrefundable unless I am able to fill your spot.
If you’ve been thinking your puppy is too young, your dog isn’t a “working dog,” or tracking sounds too serious for what you’re looking for — this class may be exactly what you’re looking for.

🐾 INTRODUCTION TO TRACKING — COMING THIS OCTOBER! 🐾
We’ve had some interest in our upcoming Introduction to Tracking Class, so here’s a quick breakdown of what the class will be all about.
📅 Starting in October
⏰ Every other Sunday | 12:30–1:30 PM
💲 $150 for 6 lessons
This class will focus on footstep tracking — teaching your dog to methodically follow the track left by a person rather than simply searching an area for an odor.
Throughout the class, we’ll work on:
🐾 Teaching your dog to use their nose in a more methodical way
🐾 Following a track over distance
🐾 Working through turns and changes in direction
🐾 Handling different terrain and changing scent conditions
🐾 Working through distractions
🐾 Helping the dog stay committed to the track
🐾 Teaching handlers how to better read and trust their dogs
Tracking is a great way to build confidence, concentration, independence, problem-solving skills, and teamwork between dog and handler.
It can also provide a strong foundation for more advanced tracking, man-trailing, search-and-rescue work, and other scent-related activities.
🐕 Who can participate?
All dogs and all experience levels are welcome.
Dogs do not need to interact directly with other dogs or people during the class. Dogs that need additional space, including reactive dogs, can participate while working at a safe and appropriate distance.
🎥 There WILL be homework!
Between classes, handlers should plan on practicing at least 2–3 times per week.
Before the next class, I’ll also ask you to submit a video of one complete track. This gives me a chance to see what is happening between lessons and help make adjustments before problems become habits.
With permission, some of these videos may also be shared so everyone can follow the progress of the dogs throughout the course.
This isn’t about seeing which dog can get to the end the fastest. It’s about teaching the dog to slow down, think, use their nose, work through problems, and stay committed to the track.

It’s about building a dog that can go places with you, experience new environments, and still make good decisions.

This is what real-world training is all about.
Kevin and Amp aren't being asked to heel. They're free to explore, sniff, and enjoy the trail while still staying connected with us as we move.
Off-leash training isn't about keeping your dog glued to your side. It's about building the communication and control that allows them to safely have more freedom.
