Are you a student looking to gain hands-on experience in animal care while making a real difference? J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue is seeking motivated Animal Care Interns to join our team. This is an ideal opportunity to work directly with exotic pets, support rescue operations, and build valuable skills for a career in animal science, conservation, or nonprofit work.

What You’ll Do:
✨ Provide daily care for rescued animals (feeding, cleaning, enrichment)
✨ Assist with intakes, adoptions, and customer service at the rescue
✨ Learn about husbandry for reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, and small mammals
✨ Support rescue operations through service calls and maintenance tasks
✨ Help at community events and fundraisers (with opportunities to earn extra hours)

Schedule & Pay:

3 shifts per week (1 PM - 6 PM) at the rescue

Additional paid opportunities at events and service/maintenance calls

What We’re Looking For:
✔ Students or early-career individuals interested in animal care or related fields
✔ Reliable, detail-oriented, and willing to work hands-on with a variety of animals

At our Exotic Pet Surrender Event at Fontana Jt. 8 School District, we welcomed one very special guest: a cockatiel surrendered by an owner who could no longer provide care.

While it may seem small, this surrender is a big win. This cockatiel now has the chance at a safe and healthy future — and most importantly, it was not released into the wild where it could have struggled to survive and threatened native wildlife.

As our Invasive Species Specialist, Macy Yohr, shared:
“Even when we take in a single animal, it’s a win. This cockatiel now has a secure future, and more importantly, it was not released into the wild.”

After a short quarantine, the cockatiel will be available for adoption through JRAAR.

This stunning XL Butterfly Koi came to J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue on August 9, 2025, after their previous owner—who purchased them at Meijer—realized their tank just wasn’t big enough. With long, flowing fins and graceful movements, Butterfly Koi need lots of space to thrive. 💙🧡



🔍 Butterfly Koi Quick Care Info:
📏 Adult Size: 24–36 inches (2–3 feet!)
📅 Lifespan: 20–30+ years with proper care
🏡 Housing: Outdoor pond strongly preferred
– Minimum 1,000 gallons for one XL koi (larger is always better)
– Strong filtration and aeration required
🌡️ Water Temp: 59–77°F
⚖️ pH: 7.0–8.5, stable water quality is key
💧 Care Note: These koi are not suitable for indoor aquariums long-term

🍽️ Diet: Omnivore
– High-quality koi pellets
– Supplement with veggies (peas, lettuce, spinach) and fruits (melon, orange slices)
– Occasional protein treats: earthworms, shrimp
