Social media has helped us grow to where we are today. We have used it to promote our cats for adoption. We have used it to procure donations for vetting, for cat food, to promote events and to build a community for cat lovers, but today I am using it for a most urgent and important matter, to try and save our cat sanctuary.
We rented and moved into our current location over four years ago. We have always rented because we never had enough money to buy something outright and as a business could not qualify for a mortgage. Our rent has climbed to a staggering $5,469.78, we are barely able to pay this every month. On top of medical bills, electric, food and all the other expenses related to rescue, we just can’t afford it any longer.
Our lease expires September 2026. We have been looking for months for a property, they are either not zoned correctly, have flooding or fire issues, bad location, etc. Anything we have found that would work, is just too much money. We need help finding property. Ideally it would have electric, septic, a well and a workshop or building. If anyone knows of anything, please contact me at (239) 675-9070. Although we have almost a year to find a new spot, we are now faced another challenge….eviction.
A few months ago, I noticed there was water bubbling on top of the septic tank. I called JC Drainfield to come out and pump it. They did do that and also sent me a proposal for $15,000 to replace/repair the drainfield. I sent it to our landlord and she said she would send a company they use to check it out. A week or so later I received an email from her stating that her company said the drainfield was broken because of cat hair and I was to pay to fix it. The cost of the repair from her company is $11,500.
I was shocked because I couldn’t believe that cat hair would destroy a septic system. We only use the septic tank for the washing machine and the one toilet, that is barely used. I read the proposal and thought ok, well I guess I won’t use the septic system and we started bringing home laundry. I also didnt realize she wanted me to fix it/pay for it immediately. I figured it out when her attorney sent a letter letting me know I had 20 days to fix it or they would file for eviction. In my lease, it states that any maintenance/repairs are at my expense and considered rent. So when I didn’t take care of this issue immediately, they declared non-payment of rent and have started the eviction process. I don’t have $11,500 to fix this problem, I barely have enough money to cover rent. We have less than two weeks to come up with money or else we have to move, we being the volunteers and the 250 cats we have in residence.
I am literally begging for help right now. We have nowhere to go. Our county shelter can’t take on 250 cats, especially with a large part being feral and also FELV positive cats. Even if we found a place tomorrow, it would take months to move. We have no choice but to pay this and keep looking for a new place.
It kills me to have to spend this kind of money on something that isn’t even our equipment. I would much rather be spending this money on spay and neuters and healthcare for our resident cats. I literally have no choice but to pay it or else we will have to close and I don’t know what I will do with the cats.
This is what we need…
🐈 $11,500 to stop the eviction process
🐈 A new permanent home for the cats
The sanctuary that we provide to cats is desperately needed. There is no other magical place to bring unsocialized/feral cats, we are it. We offer refuge to cats that have been living in filthy, abusive situations. We offer shelter to those that have been trying to survive on the streets. When someone wants to “get rid of” cats that made the grave mistake of stepping foot on the homeowners grass, where are they supposed to go?
We rarely take owner surrenders, there are plenty of other organizations that only take in friendly cats. We focus on the cats that have no where to go, that aren’t friendly, the ones that people consider a nuisance, where will they go now?
I can’t let these cats down. I can’t and won’t give up on something that we have been working on for 14 years. We made a promise to take care of these cats, please help us to not let them down.
Please donate today to help us save our sanctuary. Please share, we need all the help we can get. Thank you. ❤️🤞🏼
