ROCKY'S RAMBLINGS
Hello, again! This month I would like to talk to you about the good old summertime!!!

The days are longer and hotter and that brings its own unique set of problems for keeping your pets safe. We still love going for walkies but take us in the cooler parts of the day. Also be mindful of the temperature of the pavement as it can burn our paw pads before you even know what is happening. Consider boots to protect our paws. Shorter walks will also keep us from overheating. Heat stroke is life threatening for us puppers! Learn to recognize the stages of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in dogs. If it is just too hot to be outside keep us in where it’s cool and make us use our noggins. Hide our food or some treats and have us use our nose to find them or teach us a new trick.

If you have us outside make sure we have a place to get into the shade and plenty of fresh water to drink and maybe even a kiddie pool to wade in. Why should the kiddies have all the fun?!?

Other activities we would enjoy is digging for fruits in a frozen bowl. Take an appropriate size bowl for your pooch and put some dog safe foods such as cucumbers, carrots or blueberries. Fill it with water or broth and put it in the freezer overnight for us to enjoy outside the next day.

If your pet isn’t microchipped now would be a great time to do that. If your pet is chipped make sure your information is up to date. A lot of us are spending more time outside and have more opportunities to go on a walk about. This is also the 250th birthday for the USA and there are bound to be lots of fireworks set off. For dogs, fireworks can be very scary. Having us microchipped can help in getting us back home should we totally freak out and run for our lives.

Using these tips will help keep us safe and healthy this summer!
