New World screwworm has returned to the U.S. for the first time in decades. It's still rare — but here's what every pet owner should know. 🐾

This parasite's larvae feed on living tissue and can affect pets, not just livestock. The good news: a few simple habits go a long way.
• Keep your pet's flea and tick prevention current
• Check them over after time outdoors — ears, paws, and skin folds
• Clean and cover any wound, and make sure it's healing

Call your veterinarian about any wound that smells bad, won't heal, seems to get deeper, or has visible maggots — and never try to treat a suspected case yourself.
