🧪 Calcium and Soil pH: The Product Matters

Calcium is important for plant development, root growth and soil structure—but not every calcium product affects soil pH in the same way.

That’s why the first question should not simply be:

“Does this field need calcium?”

It should be:

“Does this field need calcium, pH correction—or both?”

Here are three calcium options that may serve different purposes:

⬆️ High-Calcium Lime

High-calcium—or calcitic—lime contains calcium carbonate. It supplies calcium while neutralizing soil acidity, making it appropriate when a soil test shows that pH needs to be raised.

🌱 Bio-Cal®

Bio-Cal® is a specialized calcium-based soil amendment containing multiple calcium sources designed to improve calcium availability, nutrient utilization and soil conditions. Its fit should be evaluated as part of the field’s complete fertility program rather than selected from pH alone.

➡️ Gypsum

Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur but does not substantially raise or lower soil pH. It may be considered when calcium or sulfur is needed but the current pH does not call for lime.

The takeaway:

✅ Low pH and calcium needed? A quality liming material may address both.
✅ Calcium needed but pH is already adequate? A non-liming calcium source may be more appropriate.
✅ Unsure what the field needs? Start with a soil test.

Bring your soil test to Bluff Country Feed & Seed, and let’s build a recommendation around your soil, crop rotation and fertility goals.

🌱 Are Your Crops Getting the Nutrients You’re Paying For?

Every year, farmers make a significant investment in fertilizer. But when soil pH is outside the preferred range for the crop, roots may not be able to use those nutrients as efficiently.

Soil pH affects the availability of nutrients such as phosphorus, zinc, manganese and iron. Even when a soil test shows that nutrients are present, they can become chemically less available when the soil is too acidic or too alkaline.

Calcium is an essential plant nutrient that supports root growth, cell structure and healthy soil function. However, calcium content and soil pH are not the same measurement.

Think of it this way:

🚪 The nutrients may already be in the soil.
🔑 Proper soil conditions help unlock them.

Before applying more fertilizer—or choosing a calcium product—start with a current soil test. Knowing your soil pH, buffer pH and nutrient levels can help you select the right amendment and get more value from every fertilizer dollar.

Bring your soil test to Bluff Country Feed & Seed. We’ll help you understand what it says and determine the next step.

💧🐃 Hydration Starts With More Than Water

When temperatures climb, keeping cattle comfortable isn't just about providing plenty of clean water—it's also about making sure they have access to a balanced mineral program.

During the summer months, cattle can experience increased mineral and electrolyte demands. A quality free-choice mineral helps support normal body functions that are especially important during hot weather.

Key nutrients include:

✔️ Salt (Sodium & Chloride) – Encourages water consumption and helps maintain proper hydration.

✔️ Potassium – Supports muscle function and helps maintain normal fluid balance.

✔️ Magnesium – Important for muscle and nerve function, especially for grazing cattle.

✔️ Copper, Zinc & Selenium – Trace minerals that support immune function, hoof health, reproductive performance, and help cattle respond to everyday environmental stress.

Summer heat can reduce feed intake, making every bite—and every ounce of mineral—count even more.

✅ Keep fresh, clean water available at all times.
✅ Check mineral feeders regularly.
✅ Monitor mineral intake throughout the grazing season.

Healthy cattle start with proper hydration and balanced nutrition.

Stop by Bluff Country Feed & Seed and let us help you choose the right mineral program for your herd.
