Can you guess what Maxi and I were up to this afternoon? 🧐

If you guessed practicing for vet visits, you’d be correct!

Did you know that most veterinary practices will schedule a “happy visit” where you can come in (with or without a trainer) to work on making veterinary visits for your pup a more positive experience? These are fabulous for all dogs, but Maxi’s family agreed to be proactive about making the vet a great place (with lots of self control) for her BEFORE they had a problem, which we absolutely love!

We packed all of the essentials: a treat pouch, her custom muzzle from bigsnoofdoggear, her dogtraofficial e-collar, and some high value snacks. Coming in prepared is half the battle for a successful vet visit with an excitable or anxious pup, and Maxi’s training visit with akronmedinavethospital was easy-breezy! We cannot thank the staff (and her dad) enough for the cooperation in setting this silly little gal up for a lifetime of success after her training program.

💡A little : use your obedience skills like loose leash walking into the building (be picky!), your down stay or “under” cue in the lobby, and place for the scale to help your dog stay in the best brain space possible, even if they are a little stressed about the doctor! 🧑‍⚕️

Zuri is currently looking for a new couch to call her own. She is a 7ish year old pitbull mix, but don’t let that scare you. Zuri is a great reminder that age is just a number; she still has the energy and get up and go of a two year old pup. Just with better training and a polished set of snuggling skills. 🤗

Zuri would be best suited as a single dog, and this is the only reason her person is considering rehoming her. Zuri is very people social, but can often be “too much” with other dogs, which gets her into trouble. She is e-collar trained, crate trained, muzzle trained, walks nicely on leash, and knows all of her basic commands. She is looking for a family that will commit to maintaining her training (she thrives with predictable structure and brainwork to keep her confidence up!) and give her a soft landing to live out her golden years. And no, we don’t think she is going to slow down anytime soon. Get the chuck-it balls and your hiking boots ready 🎾 🥾

Zuri can be prone to separation anxiety, but this is easily mitigated with a good kennel routine, regular exercise, and consistent boundaries. She will be rehomed with all of her training equipment and we will provide transition training and discounted lifetime support to set her up for success in her new home! 🫶🏼🩷 We love this little dog as much as her current dad; at the end of the day we just want her to land with her perfect match!

Are you dreaming of hands-free obedience where you can trust your dog to make the right choices at home AND in public? 🥹

Honey’s family was ready to level-up their relationship with their pup and her training so that they can do just that! She is completing our Perfect Puppy program, which means she’s been training with us on and off since she was just a baby! Now, at close to a year, she’s ready to tackle all of life’s big adventures with confidence! 🐕 🤩

This is just a little clip of how we start to build reliable “off-leash” skills once the dog is fluent “on-leash”! Here she is dragging a long line, both for leash law compliance and to allow us to help her find the correct behavior or position if she gets a little distracted. (And if your trainer skips the on-leash part 🚩…. It might be time to find a different trainer 🫣)

Little Poppy wrapped up her Puppy Primer with a few swimming lessons.

Often, when clients ask us “what will my puppy learn in a puppy program,” and the answer is “a little bit of everything!”, this is what we really mean. Lots of confidence building and life skills, with a dash of extra fun along the way! 📖 🐾

A peek behind the “curtain”… 🎭

This is me - Jess - the face behind Atlas Canine. And my ringsport dog, Kirby. I rarely post about myself here, but felt the need to share since I have been DRAMATICALLY behind on communication and that really isn’t my style.

Being a business owner is an awesome thing. I get to help so many amazing families and their pups. As most of you know, we don’t have a huge staff here or an admin answering the calls and scheduling mindless “consultation” (aka sales) meetings. The small, personalized nature of our programs is something that I really value. But sometimes, that means that keeping everything in a perfect balance can be hard. We’ve been away this past week on vacation, which already puts emails and calls on a bit of a backlog, but I ended the trip with a somewhat scary trip to the ER…twice. 🏥

I’m ok, and will be back to business as usual next week, but I am now wildly behind on messages. So, I promise I’m not ignoring you, and if you’re new, I would love to help you and your dog. 🐾 I’m just working to get caught back up while still prioritizing the care of the dogs here for boarding through the weekend and my own health for the next few days.

We’ll be back to adorable pictures of the dogs here to bring out their very best soon!
