With all the recent local discussion surrounding bats, our team at VCA Peone Pines wanted to share a quick checklist to keep your household safe this season:

✅ Check the Records: Look up your pet’s last rabies vaccine date. Booster schedules are critical for continuous protection.
✅ Watch for Wildlife: Keep pets on a leash during late evening walks when bats are most active.
✅ Protect the Indoors: Ensure window screens and vents are secure so wildlife can't accidentally enter.
✅ DON'T PANIC! Educate yourself on the risks.

If your pet is due for a booster, or if you're looking for a dedicated local veterinary team to partner with, we are always accepting new patients. To help welcome you to the VCA Peone Pines family, your first physical exam with us is completely free. Beyond the exam, a treatment plan will be reviewed prior to any treatment being performed.

🚨🐾 RABIES ALERT: SPOKANE COUNTY 🦇🚨 Two bats have tested positive for rabies in Spokane County within the past two weeks.

The first positive bat was confirmed on July 24, 2026, marking the first rabid bat reported in Spokane County this year. A second bat tested positive on August 4, 2026, with suspected exposure to a domestic animal.

Spokane Regional Health District has also reported an increase in interactions between bats and pets this year.

🦇 Dogs and cats can become infected with rabies if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. Even a small or unnoticed bite can transmit rabies. Bat teeth are tiny, and bite wounds may not be obvious.

If your pet spends time outdoors, especially around dusk or dawn, please be especially cautious.

⚠️ Watch for unusual bat behavior
Never approach or handle a bat that is:
• Flying during the daytime
• Unable to fly
• Acting unusually or approaching people
• Making unusual vocalizations
• Found somewhere it normally would not be

Keep children and pets away and contact the appropriate authorities for assistance.

⚠️⚠️ Rabies is a fatal disease once clinical signs develop. There is no effective antiviral treatment.⚠️⚠️
Signs in pets can be variable and may include:

• Sudden changes in behavior
• Loss of appetite
• Drooling or difficulty swallowing
• Changes in vocalization
• Lack of coordination or stumbling
• Weakness or paralysis
• Seizures
• Overreaction to normal sights, sounds, or touch

🚫 Do not handle the wild animal with your bare hands.
📞 Contact your veterinarian and Spokane Regional Health District for guidance.
💉 Exposed dogs and cats should receive a rabies vaccination within 96 hours of exposure.
⚠️ If vaccination is delayed, additional observation, confinement, or quarantine may be required.

🚨⚠️ HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM ALERT: WEST MEDICAL LAKE ⚠️🚨 If West Medical Lake is part of your summer plans, please keep yourself AND your pets out of the water. 🐶🐾

Recent testing at West Medical Lake detected microcystin above the state recreational guideline, which means this is not a good time for swimming, boating, fishing, or letting your dog take a dip.

💧 Harmful algae blooms can produce toxins that are dangerous to people and animals. Unfortunately, you cannot determine whether an algae bloom is toxic simply by looking at it, and toxicity can change over time.

🚫 Keep pets and people OUT of water that:
• Looks discolored
• Has foam, scum, mats, or paint-like streaks on the surface
• Smells unusual or foul
• Has dead fish or other animals along the shoreline

Dogs can also be exposed when they lick algae or contaminated water from their fur after swimming. If your pet does accidentally enter the water, rinse them thoroughly with clean water and prevent them from licking their coat.

⚠️ When in doubt, stay out!

❤️ We are here for our community. After the recent Spokane area fires, we know many families are still navigating uncertainty, displacement, and the stress of making sure their loved ones, including their pets, are safe and cared for.

VCA Peone Pines Animal Hospital are open this Saturday to help support pets and families who need us. Whether your pet needs medical attention, a medication refill, or follow-up care during this challenging time, our team is here to help.

If your regular veterinarian is still temporarily closed due to the fires, we are offering complimentary exams for new patients needing medication refills so pets can continue receiving essential medications. We are happy to send records back to your regular veterinarian once they are able to reopen and resume care.

We are incredibly grateful for the patience, kindness, and flexibility our clients have shown as we work through this together. Some of our own team members have been impacted by the fires, and your support has meant so much.

Please call us to schedule your pet’s visit. We are honored to be part of this community and will continue doing everything we can to help. ❤️🐾

❤️ Our hearts are with every family, pet, firefighter, first responder, and volunteer affected by the devastating Spokane area fires. We are deeply grateful for those working tirelessly to protect our community and are thinking of everyone facing uncertainty during this difficult time.

If your regular veterinarian is temporarily closed due to the fires and your pet needs a medication refill, VCA Peone Pines Animal Hospital is offering complimentary exams for new patients to help ensure pets continue receiving their essential medications. Once your veterinarian reopens, we will gladly send your pet's medical records back to their regular hospital so there is no interruption in their ongoing care.

Like many in our community, some of our own team members have been displaced by these fires. We sincerely appreciate your patience and flexibility as we prioritize pets with urgent medical needs while continuing to care for as many families as possible.

We are also accepting donations for the Spokane Humane Society and are happy to transport them on your behalf. Pet food, cat litter, towels, blankets, carriers, and other pet supplies are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for supporting one another during this difficult time. If your pet needs assistance, please give us a call. Together, we'll get through this. ❤️🐾

Porcupines aren’t friends… they’re lessons that you dont forget. What looks like a bowl of “quirky decor” is actually a reminder that wildlife can defend themselves in ways we don’t want to test firsthand. Those quills are no joke.

If your pet has an unfortunate close encounter, don’t try to remove quills at home—it can be painful and lead to deeper injury. Give us a call so we can help safely and comfortably. 🐾
