A WIN for the Inmates because they have the opportunity to work with the animals, which gives them a purpose and an opportunity for employment when they are released from prison, a WIN for the dog because it earns a Good Citizenship Certificate which is the first step in becom

ing a therapeutic dog and most schools, nursing homes and other locations allow dogs with Good Citizenship Training to be a part of programs at their facilities, and of course a WIN for the new owner who get and absolutely amazing highly trained rescue dog.

“A New Leash on Life” is a program that allows minimum and medium custody state prisons to partner with local animal shelters, animal welfare agencies, and/or private non-profit agencies to train dogs in preparation for their adoption. In turn, the inmates are given a chance to serve the community by training dogs to be well-behaved pets. Selected dogs are placed with inmate trainers in a prison setting for eight to twelve weeks. The inmates teach basic obedience, house training, and socialization through positive reinforcement and repetition. Dogs are taught to walk on and off the leash and to respond to basic commands. Each prison facility partners with a local partner or sponsor, a volunteer animal trainer, and local merchants or civic organizations that can support the program with needed supplies and services. There are currently two apprenticeship programs offered to inmates in the New Leash on Life program. In these programs inmates have the opportunity to receive certified training that will help them obtain a job upon their release from prison. To obtain apprentice certification through the Department of Labor, an inmate must complete 4000 hours on the job training as well as a total of 288 hours related instruction. The related instruction is either provided through the community college or the volunteer trainer. The first apprenticeship is a Dog Trainer Apprenticeship that began in 2007 at Craven CI and has since expanded to include Eastern CI. The second is an Animal Care Provider Apprenticeship and will begin in 2009 at Brown Creek CI and will allow inmates to complete the on the job training at any of the New Leash on Life facilities.

These are the descriptions of each dog. The name is below the photo.

Lucy is a 6 year old, 11lb. Chihuahua (mix?) She could not be a sweeter more loving little girl. She was found stray and covered in fleas so when no one came for her she came into FurBabies Rescue and is ready for a quiet home. She would be best as an only dog for someone who has plenty of lap time for her. She is potty trained but does not love the crate.

Mister is a 7 month old, 7ish lb. Chihuahua (mix?) He is in a foster home with a pack of 5 furry foster brothers and sisters of all sizes and he loves them all. He came from a hoarding situation and was super shy but has come out of his shell and is doing amazing. He is super friendly and loving and wants nothing more than to cuddle with his person. He will do fine in a home with or without other dogs. He loves to play but his favorite thing is to snuggle in bed with his foster mom. He is potty trained but does not currently sleep in a crate.

Molly is a 7 month old, 7ish lb. Chihuahua (mix?) She is in a foster home with many furry foster brothers and sisters of all sizes and she loves them all. She also came from the same hoarding situation and was super shy but has begun to come out of her shell She will continue to need some work with her confidence and will also do best in a home with one or more confident dogs to continue to teach her the ropes. She is potty trained and does great in her crate at night.

(ADOPTION PENDING) Monty is a 4 month old, 7ish lb. Maltipoo- He is very sweet and snuggly. He was GREAT for his bath and GREAT for his groom. He is doing amazing with his foster brothers and sisters and I’m sure he would be good with kids. He is just a great little guy. Keep in mind he is a puppy and will need continued work on his potty training. He does not love his crate but does sleep for a few hours in it at night.

Rusty is a 2year old, 8ish lb Chihuahua (mix?) He is such a sweet and cuddly little boy. He is in a foster home with all sizes of furry brothers and sisters and does great with them. He is playful and fun and will do well in about any home. If there are children in the home of that visit he would need for them to be respectful because he is, after all, a Chihuahua. He is potty trained but does not currently sleep in a crate.

Sargent is a 1 year old, 15ish lb. Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle mix) He is such a cute and playful fella but was obviously pretty neglected since he was dirty and matted. He takes a minute to warm up but when he does he loves his belly scratches and lap time. His ideal home would be patient and respectful of his need to learn the ropes. He would also do best with a confident dog to continue to teach him the ropes. He sleeps well in his crate and is doing well on his potty training.

Sugar is an 8 year old, 10ish lb. Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund mix) . She is as sweet as her name suggests. She is such an easy pup that To us she seems to be younger than 8 but it is always just an estimate. She loves to snuggle, is great with other dogs, would likely be fine with cats and is just an amazing little pup. She is crate and potty trained.

Zuzu is an 8 year old 8ish lb. Chihuahua (mix?) He is the sweetest most cuddly little guy. He came from a hoarding situation several months back and has made slow but sure progress and its now ready for his forever home. His ideal home would be a quiet home with a lot of lap time. He would be fine with or without other dogs. He is crate and potty trained.
