Cape Cod Dog Center Statement on Recent Tragedy

Cape Cod Dog Center regrets to share the devastating news of a recent incident that resulted in the loss of a beloved pet. The safety, care, and well-being of every animal entrusted to us is, and will always be, our highest priority.

Last week, during evening kennel transitions, two dogs, one large and one small, unexpectedly crossed paths. While this was not a fight, the reaction of one dog led to the tragic and sudden loss of the other’s life.

At the time, there were 13 dogs in the facility, under supervision that met or exceeded the industry standard staff-to-dog ratio of 1:15. The incident did not occur during group play, but during kennel transitions.

This was a dog we had cared for over several years without incident, which makes this loss especially heartbreaking. Both families involved, as well as our staff, are deeply affected by this tragedy.

Moving forward, Cape Cod Dog Center is implementing stricter protocols to ensure that small and large dogs are never placed in close proximity during transitions or kennel time, regardless of prior history or owner request. By being transparent, we hope to raise awareness of the inherent risks all facilities face in caring for pets, and to help prevent such tragedies in the future.
