It's April! Which means it's Heartworm Awareness Month!

🪱 What is Heartworm Disease?
Heartworm disease is a serious illness caused by Dirofilaria immitis—a parasite commonly known as heartworm.

These worms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected animals.

🦟 How Do Pets Get It?
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes.

When a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites an animal (like your dog or cat), the larvae can be transferred.

Inside the new host, the larvae mature into adult worms, eventually making their way into your pet's heart and lungs.

⚠️ Symptoms
Pets infected with heartworm may show few or no symptoms at all.

Symptoms include but are not limited to coughing, exercise intolerance, weight loss, and difficulty breathing.

✅ Prevention is Easy—Treatment is Not!
Get your dogs tested once a year for heartworm, starting at the age of 7 months old.

Keep your dogs on monthly heartworm preventatives.

Take a look at Benjamin getting his weekly laser therapy session😎! Ben experiences chronic iliopsoas pain and low grade hip pain, so he undergoes weekly 'Companion Laser Light Therapy' treatments to help manage his deep tissue discomfort.

“Companion Laser Therapy” for pets is a form of treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and infrared light to provide several positive effects on the overall well-being of your pet. This follows the concept of photobiomodulation (PBM), which is the process where light energy is introduced to provide beneficial effects on tissues.

This therapy influences biological processes to promote healing, reduce pain, and improve overall tissue health, providing relief for both acute and chronic pain.

Pets who suffer from arthritis, hip dysplasia, muscle strains, or sprains can benefit greatly from laser light therapy. For more information, visit: https://companionanimalhealth.com/photobiomodulation

🐾 Check Those Lumps and Bumps! 🐾

Noticed a new lump or bump on your pet? While many are harmless, some could be a cause for concern—especially as pets age. Early detection is key!

🚨 Keep an eye out for masses that:
➡️ Grow quickly
➡️ Have an abnormal color
➡️ Feel firm or fixed in place
➡️ Are ulcerated or bleeding

If you find something suspicious, schedule a vet visit right away. A simple check-up could make all the difference!
