She is very affectionate, adores human companionship, and won’t hesitate to jump up into your lap for attention and cuddles. Evangeline does prefer a quieter home, so young kids may be too much activity for her. She needs time to adjust to other cats or to friendly dogs in the home, but may do well with other animals that respect her space.

Funny story: Wednesday & Stormy are particular about the company they keep, but they must recognize each other as ‘equals’ because they seem to get along well! So much so that they’re now roommates in Breya’s Room (free roaming space).

To say that Melvin is a sweet cat would be a huge understatement! He is calm and makes cute mrrrps and chirps, asking for affection. His only flaw: he insists on a very clean litter box. He’s persnickety that way, but honestly he’s worth it!

Last Thursday, I had the absolute privilege of speaking to four third grade classes at The John Cooper School about Abandoned Animal Rescue! We talked about the importance of spaying and neutering (it’s never too early to start learning!), how to care for cats and dogs, what to do if you find a stray animal, and I got to answer all of their thoughtful and curious questions.

These amazing students also held a donation drive for us, created handmade bandannas for our adopted dogs to wear as they head off to their forever homes, and—on top of all that—donated $500 to help us continue our mission!

Every single year, these incredible students and teachers show up for AAR and the animals in our care in the most generous and heartfelt ways. We truly can’t express how much it means to us.

And a special shoutout to sweet little Langston (not yet available for adoption), who was a huge hit with both the students and teachers!

From all of us at AAR—thank you, The John Cooper School, for your continued kindness, support, and compassion. 💛🐾

*Check meowt update!* Fiona (AAR Currie) adopted March 2025. Thank you for being so patient and letting Fiona settle in!

From her family: ‘I just wanted to thank you all for the work you did with Currie. We love her so much. We call her Fiona now. Fiona was so shy when we first got her home that she hid in the bathroom under the toilet for the first week. When we let her out of the bathroom to explore the house, she ran and we couldn't find her for days. We just kept putting food out, and in the middle of the night it would disappear. We were hoping that she was eating, and it wasn't just our other cat Maeve getting seconds. Eventually, she came out of hiding to get food in the middle of the day, and we started to see her more and more often. Now, she's always around, and plays with Maeve, and comes up to us for pets. We still can't pick her up, and I'm not sure she will ever be the sit on your lap and cuddle type like Maeve is, but we are happy to let Fiona be who she is. This is a picture with her and Maeve cuddled up together, like you'll find them most afternoons. Thank you for everything!’

From his family: ‘We love our Cheeto and can't believe we've already had him for a year! He started out shy, and although he's still fairly cautious around new people, he's an energetic, curious, zoomie ball of fun, and he definitely loves sitting on the window seats, watching the outdoors, and getting scritches. We are so happy to have him. Thank you for introducing us!’

Cookie Pupdate (adopted 9/15/2024)

"Cookie is doing great. He enjoys going on walks and visiting PetSmart and Home Depot. I love him (even with his few challenges)😉. He's definitely a keeper. He's really adjusted well in all aspects. He's calmer, behaves well, and is a pleasure to be with. I guess we are "stuck" with each other." ❤

Happy tears seeing this update! For those who don't remember, Cookie was with us for 615 days and didn't do well in the shelter environment. He was adopted, but it just wasn't the right fit for him. He then went to an amazing foster home while waiting for his family to come and meet him. We are so grateful that Cookie is now living his best life in his own happy and loving forever home. Thanks Dad!
