With SNAP benefits being cancelled, we realize that that could put cat owners in the difficult position of being able to continue to afford to care for their cat. To help community members and to do our best to keep more cats from joining the shelter system, MCP has our Cat Cupboard program. Cat owners experiencing any sort of economic hardship can fill out our online form to request cat items, and MCP will do our best to match your cat's needs from our donations. If you're financially in a place where you'd like to help cat owners in need, you're always welcome to donate food and litter, whether that's a drop-off donation or a delivery. As cat lovers, let's all do our best to support each other and our cats.

With weekly or bi-weekly transfers of cats, we always have great adoption candidates available at our shelter. But what if we had your perfect match in a cat and they didn't live at the shelter? It might feel like more work to meet different cats in foster rather than coming to an appointment or fair where you have a bunch of cats in front of you, but our foster cats could actually be a better fit with what you're looking for! Looking for a cat who wants to be an only child? Do you want a cat or kitten who is almost guaranteed to love your resident cat? In the market for a cat on a specific prescription diet to match a unique cat diet already happening at home? These are the kinds of cats who are so much happier in foster than at our shelter, and are just as much in need of a new home as our shelter cats!

An article recently shared by VICE shares research that shows cats and their owners are triggering a rise of oxytocin in one another - the same hormone that is known to reduce stress and anxiety, maintain the bond between mother and child, promote wound healing, and help regulate blood pressure. So it's not just that your cat is improving your health, you're improving theirs, too!

Overview:

-Hedgie was and is a very special cat, and at Madison Cat Project, we find the beauty in all of our feline friends!
-Madison Cat Project's communal cat rooms, phenomenal med team, and excellent foster program have made life better for Hedgie, who is still waiting to be adopted.
-**Most importantly, we can't continue to care for cats like Hedgie without your help. Please consider a donation to Madison Cat Project by visiting https://www.madisoncatproject.org/donate or send a check to 3205 Latham Drive, Madison, WI 53713!**

When we met Hedgehog, we knew he was special.

This sweet boy with sparkling bronze eyes came to us in April after having lived outside. Though he was skinny and had a rash, his spirit was undeniable, and he immediately charmed the staff. Goofy, sweet, and cuddly, he quickly earned the nickname “Hedgie” and staff took countless pictures of him.

Unfortunately, this sweet boy also presented with many medical problems. It was discovered that he had an enlarged heart, was covered in lice, had an upper respiratory infection, and needed a dental procedure.

Dr. Murphy and the vet team got to work, and Hedgie started looking and feeling better. Hedgie will always have costs associated with his care, but at Madison Cat Project, every cat gets a chance at the life they deserve.

Several special things happened that kept Hedgie happy and comfortable at Madison Cat Project. One was our communal cat rooms. We have rooms for cats who enjoy their fellow felines to spread out, play, and make friends. And boy did Hedgie make friends! He cuddled, played, watched out the window, and shared his toys with all of his new buddies in his communal cat room!

Another special thing that helped Hedgie was his dedicated foster. Hedgie’s foster took responsibility for administering his heart medication, special diet, and desire for tons of play time and continues to make Hedgie comfortable in their home as MCP provides the supplies.

Finally, Hedgie has the resources of Madison Cat Project’s medical staff, with the unique guarantee that he will get all the care he needs.

All of these things are special to MCP, but none of them are possible without your financial support.

Can you make a donation this fall to help with cats like Hedgie? $25 could buy enrichment toys to keep our cats entertained. $50 could buy vaccines. And $100 could buy a special diet.

We get cats with all sorts of medical problems. While it’s important to treat those problems, it’s also important that their stay with us is pleasant and enriching so they don’t become bored or depressed. Our community cat rooms and array of fosters make us special, and we know Hedgie is happy with us.

We hope that this autumn, as the leaves fall and the weather cools, that you’ll think of our little Hedgie and all that Madison Cat Project has done for him. And we hope you’ll be inspired to send a donation to help us keep offering medical care, social experiences, and comfortable foster care to every cat that needs it.

Hedgie thanks you, and so do we!

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week takes place November 2-8 this year, and we encourage everyone to think about all of the good shelter workers and volunteers provide homeless animals: daily care, any necessary surgery, socialization, medication & medical care, companionship, and a roof over their heads, whether that be at a shelter or in a foster home. MCP's staff are no different - we try to do all that we can for every cat that comes into our building, and help them leave our care in better shape than when they arrived. If our mission and the work we do means something to you, please donate to, volunteer for, adopt from, or promote our organization this week as a thank you to the folks who have taken on this work as their chosen career.
