Important info.

In conclusion, this study shows that the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease in dogs is linked to how long they are exposed to natural s*x hormones, and the relationship isn’t simple or linear. The highest risk was seen when females were spayed before about 1054 days (just under 3 years) and males before about 805 days (a little over 2 years). These results may help define what counts as “early” spay or neuter when it comes to cranial cruciate ligament disease risk.

Veterinary reproduction specialists now recommend hormone-preserving sterilization: preventing unwanted litters & less risk of torn cruciates.

In THEORY I agree with this policy. In REALITY I coached the AKC European Open Team for 10 years. In that 10 years we had 4 dogs that AKC officials measured at a particular jump height that made the team. Once we were overseas these 4 dogs measurements were questioned. Ultimately, 2 of the 4 measured "in" and 2 did not. As the coach of the USA team there is nothing more painful than seeing the dreams of a team member squashed when they are told they can not run. In none of these circumstances do I believe anyone was trying to "cheat". I DO believe our current system of measuring is at best "not great". So many factors play into trying to measure within a millimeter: surface, arousal level due to the environment etc. One year one of the FCI measuring officials directly and pointedly told me "AKC needs to learn how to measure dogs". No, I never shared that feedback with AKC. IMHO measuring as currently done is at best subjective and inaccurate.
