🐾 FOSTER NEEDED THIS WEEKEND FOR BARNABY! 🐾

Oh, Barnaby. 💔 This sweet little guy is only about 5-6 months old, and he has already been through more than most dogs experience in a lifetime.

Barnaby was picked up as a stray and ended up in a high-kill shelter in Texas. He also has significant scarring along his back that appears consistent with an old burn injury. We may never know exactly what happened to him, but somehow, Barnaby hasn’t let his past take away his sweet spirit.

He is still friendly, trusting, resilient, and ready to be loved. Now he just needs a safe, soft place to land when he arrives this weekend.

Barnaby is currently about 12 lbs. Based on his scruffy coat, coloring, body shape, and size, our best guess is that he may be a wire-haired Terrier/Dachshund-type mix. Breed is always just a guess without DNA testing, but we expect him to stay on the smaller side, likely under 20–25 lbs full grown.

Barnaby arrives from Texas September 4th, and we would love to have a foster home waiting for him. PDAR provides the supplies and medical care — you provide the love, patience, and safe place to decompress. ❤️

TRANSPORT HELP NEEDED:
Gainesville, VA ➡️ Newark, DE 🚨

We are in a tight spot! We have 3 animals who need a ride from Gainesville, VA to Newark, DE this Friday evening (Sept 4) or Saturday (Sept 5).

Our scheduled volunteer’s car unfortunately just ended up in the shop.

We have over 20+ incoming animals arriving this weekend who have been waiting to meet their adopters and fosters!

Managing their arrival is incredibly time-consuming, leaving us completely stretched for time.

We want to share some real numbers from our Petfinder page that perfectly illustrate the uphill battle our big dogs face every single day.

📊 Exhibit A: This is Ziva. She is a beautiful, sweet big dog who has been on Petfinder for over 2 months. Her total views? Only 165. Applications received? Zero.

📊 Exhibit B: This is Meeko. We posted this small, fluffy dog just 4 days ago. Her total views? Over 240. Applications received? 4 and counting.

There is a massive, disproportionate gap between the number of people willing to adopt or foster large dogs versus small dogs. This data is exactly why you see so many small dogs moving through our "Adopted" folder. Dogs like Meeko get noticed instantly, get adopted quickly, and we are able to fill that foster home back up with another small dog almost immediately.Meanwhile, our big dogs like Ziva wait. And wait. And wait.

Because they take longer to find homes, they occupy our large-dog foster spots for months at a time. When our large-dog fosters are full, we have to say no to saving other big dogs in shelters who are running out of time. We will be posting some bigger dogs that we have been asked to help, but unfortunately have had to turn away.

Washington D. C. : Meet Millie. She is a 9-month-old, 14-pound Chihuahua mix who arrived wearing a heavy coat of fear. At first glance, Millie appears completely timid and shut down. She is the kind of dog who might hide in the back of her kennel, making herself as small as possible, hoping the big, loud world won't notice her.

A moment that seems heartbreaking is actually a reminder that every animal has a special personality waiting to be understood. Some dogs need extra time before they feel comfortable. Fear, past experiences, or a quiet nature can affect how they behave, but love and patience can help them open their hearts.

Behind Millie's nervous expression is a loyal friend waiting for someone who believes in her. Once she knows she is safe and finally opens up, her true colors shine—she is friendly with both cats and dogs and sweet.

Stories like Millie's remind us to look beyond first impressions. Dogs do not need to be perfect to deserve care. They need kindness, support, and someone willing to see the wonderful companion they can become.

Let’s give Millie the patience she needs to write her happy ending. Every rescued and loved dog has a story worth celebrating. At just 10 to 12 weeks old, Bandit is officially on a mission to steal your heart.He’s had a bumpy start, but he is actively healing from mange, and his soft new fur is already starting to grow back. Beneath his changing coat is a total sweetheart just waiting to shine. All he needs is a little continued TLC, good food, and time to completely blossom. He is not quite ready for adoption, but you can follow us for updates! ᩣシ

A Little Quirky, a LOT Cuddly: Low-confidence Oakley needs a pack to lean on!!

Oakley is a beautiful four-month-old puppy who will likely grow to be 40 to 50 pounds. He is a sweet, low-confidence soul who just needs a little extra reassurance to shine. He absolutely loves to cuddle and will happily curl up in your lap or lounge on a swing with you, though he can still be a bit timid until he feels completely safe.

Oakley is very smart and already pretty much housetrained which is amazing for his age! He absolutely adores other dogs and does wonderfully playing with his foster sibling, Bandit. Because he finds comfort in canine company, he would be happiest with a playful resident dog to help build his confidence. He also loves kids and does well with them.
Like many puppies, Oakley has a few quirks and is still learning house manners. He happily eats his meals in his crate but will bark loudly to let you know he is ready to get out. Because he can be vocal when he wants to express himself, he would not do well in an apartment. He also has some puppy curiosity, so he will chew on things if left alone and unsupervised outside of his pen. Because he can sometimes act like he thinks he is in trouble, he needs gentle, positive reinforcement to help his self-esteem grow.
Oakley will thrive best in a home where someone is around most of the time to keep him company and where there is another friendly dog to be his best friend. If you have the patience and the lap space for this sweet boy, he will be the most loyal, cuddly companion imaginable! He has had 0 applications so far and we would love to change that!

A GENTLE BREEZE & A COOL GALE ARE BLOWING IN FROM TEXAS!

We have two absolutely beautiful 4-month-old Great Pyrenees puppies catching a ride from Texas to Virginia, and they need a place to land. True to their names, Breezy and Gale are about as chill as it gets—no destructive storm warnings here, just pure, relaxed puppy love!

They are scheduled to arrive the weekend of September 10th, and we are looking for fosters to welcome them home.

Getting them into a foster home gives them a soft place to land while they wait for their forever families. They were originally strays and will need from scratch training.

ANIMAL TRANSPORT NEEDED: GAINESVILLE, VA TO WASHINGTON, DC
🚨We are looking for a volunteer transporter for tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday to help move a sweet small dog back to safety. One of our previously adopted dogs was surrendered back to us this evening through no fault of her own. She is confused, and we want to get her back into a comfortable, loving foster home in D.C. as soon as possible.

The Passenger: A sweet, non-aggressive dog who just wants to feel safe.

Supplies Provided: We will provide everything she needs for the trip. You just need a vehicle with enough space for a crate or a secure back seat.

🚗 Route Info: The drive is roughly 35–45 miles depending on the specific D.C. neighborhood, typically taking about 45–60 minutes via I-66 East. We are incredibly flexible on exact pickup times to accommodate your schedule.
