And then there was one...

Some people might feel bad for me since I am the very last puppy left in my litter, but if you ask me, they just saved the best for last! My name is Rafa.

I am currently about 3 months old and 22 pounds, which means I am going to be a big, lovable guy when I am fully grown. One of my siblings actually just got a DNA test done, and nobody was surprised when it came back as a mix of German Shepherd, Great Pyrenees, and Rhodesian Ridgeback!

That DNA mix explains my coolest feature: I have a unique ridge of hair running right down my back that grows in the opposite direction of the rest of my coat. Fun fact about my ridge: it is a incredibly rare genetic trait shared by only three breeds in the entire world! Some old-school dog breeders have a romantic saying that the ridge is actually "where God sewed them up after stuffing them with love." On me, it just looks like a permanent, dashing mohawk!

Aside from being uniquely handsome, I am an amazing puppy. Because I have been staying in a foster home, I already know how to behave in a house. I am completely crate trained and do not have accidents when walked on a regular schedule. I even sleep through the night without needing any late-night potty breaks!

I am smart, have great manners, and have already mastered the "sit" command. Since I am highly food-motivated, teaching me new things will be a breeze. I am also a total sweetheart—I am wonderful with kids, love other dogs, and did great when I met a cat. With continued socialization, I'd do just fine in a home with a feline friend.

🐾 “Why are your adoption fees so high?” 🐾

It’s a question we hear often at Paws Deep Animal Rescue, and we know our adoption fees sometimes receive criticism. We understand that $400 - $600 is a lot of money, but we wanted to share what goes into rescuing these animals and why our fees are necessary. ❤️

First and foremost, we are a nonprofit rescue. Adoption fees aren’t profit. They go right back into caring for animals and saving more lives.

Many of our dogs come from overcrowded shelters and difficult situations in Texas and other areas where their chances of finding homes are slim. Some arrive healthy, while others come to us malnourished, sick, or battling parasites.

💰 So what does a typical $600 puppy adoption fee help cover?

🐾 Transportation to the Northeast — approximately $200

🐾 Veterinary exams and health certificates — approximately $100

🐾 Monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives

🐾 Age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming

🐾 Microchipping

🐾 Food, potty pads, and foster supplies

🐾 Medications, probiotics, and nutritional supplements for puppies dealing with parasites, digestive issues, or other illnesses

🐾 Spay/neuter surgery when the animal is old enough

Speaking of spaying and neutering…

We have animals spayed or neutered before adoption whenever they’re old enough and medically ready. For puppies and kittens who are too young, adopters must sign a spay/neuter contract agreeing to have the procedure completed at the appropriate age.

Once we receive the certificate or veterinary proof of completion, we refund $100 of their adoption fee! So a $600 puppy adoption fee becomes $500 after the refund. The adopter is responsible for arranging and paying for the surgery.

We also try to go one step further. When we rescue a litter of puppies but aren’t taking their mama into our care, we do our best to help get mom spayed, too! This is another expense we may take on because preventing future unwanted litters is just as important as rescuing the puppies already born.

❤️ Now here’s something people don’t always realize…

Not every animal’s adoption fee comes anywhere close to covering their expenses.

We take in dogs who are heartworm positive, severely malnourished, injured, or suffering from illnesses that require extensive veterinary care. Some need surgeries, hospitalization, months of treatment, or ongoing medications.

It’s not unusual for one dog’s medical expenses to reach thousands of dollars, yet their adoption fee may only be $400 or $500.

We don’t charge that adopter thousands of dollars to make up the difference. Those expenses are covered through donations, fundraising, and adoption fees from other animals.

That’s why adoption fees are so important. A healthy puppy whose expenses are lower helps us afford the dog who needs $3,000 in medical treatment. And sometimes, even a puppy’s $600 fee doesn’t fully cover everything we’ve spent.

We don’t choose which animals deserve saving based on whether we’ll recover our expenses. ❤️

We’re a foster-based nonprofit, and so much time, energy, and love goes into getting these animals healthy, transported, and ready for their forever homes. Rescue is expensive, and without adoption fees and donations, we simply couldn’t continue doing what we do.

We understand that our adoption fees won’t fit everyone’s budget, and that’s okay. But we hope this helps explain why they’re set where they are.

There is a quiet, unspoken magic in the way dogs anchor us to the present moment.

Right now, a spunky, fun-loving puppy named Hex is doing what he does best: pouring pure comfort into the lap of someone who needs it most. Looking at him resting so gently on his elderly friend, you would never guess that he spent the morning zooming around and playing. But that is the beauty of Hex. He has this beautiful intuition, knowing exactly when it is time to be silly and when it is time to just offer a steady, loving presence.

His adoption fee is $600.

Because Hex is too young to be altered prior to adoption, all puppy adoptions require a signed spay/neuter contract. The adopter agrees to have the puppy neutered at approximately 6 months of age. The adopter is responsible for scheduling and paying for the procedure. Paws Deep Animal Rescue does not cover the cost of the neuter.

Once proof of neuter is provided to the rescue, $100 of the adoption fee will be returned to the adopter via PayPal or check.

Most of our dogs are rescued from high-intake shelters in Texas or directly from the streets of South Texas. The adoption fee helps cover transportation, age-appropriate core vaccines, deworming, microchip, heartworm testing when age appropriate, and other veterinary and rescue expenses.

We partner with VCA Animal Hospitals. Every adoption includes a complimentary First Exam at a participating VCA location within the first 14 days of adoption. VCA also provides limited health guarantee coverage of up to $250 for certain minor illnesses diagnosed during that initial period.

How is this beautiful girl still looking for her forever home? Seriously, look at her.

Meet Snowball. She is a 1-year-old, 70-pound Great Pyrenees, and she is basically a giant, walking marshmallow with the sweetest soul. She has so much love to give and is completely ready to find a family to call her own.

Her foster home has nothing but amazing things to say about her. For starters, she absolutely loves kids. Her favorite thing to do right now is follow around a 3-year-old toddler like her very own fluffy guardian angel. It is the sweetest thing to watch. She is also great with other dogs of all shapes and sizes, though she definitely prefers friends who are a bit on the calmer side.

Snowball is basically a professional hug giver. She loves leaning into her people for affection and will even gently put her front paws in your lap to give you the biggest, fluffiest hugs. On top of being incredibly sweet, she is also just an easy, well-behaved girl. She is great in the car, fully crate trained, and was an absolute superstar for her recent bath. She already knows how to sit and doesn't guard her food or toys at all. She has also reportedly been around cats in the past, though any introductions to new feline friends should be slow and supervised since her experience with them is limited.

Snowball is already spayed and completely ready to move in. The only major requirement for her future family is a securely fenced yard. Because she is a Pyrenees, patrolling and roaming are just in her DNA, so she needs a safe space where she can hang out and enjoy being a big, fluffy girl.

I recently went down to North Carolina for the concert (which was absolutely amazing, by the way!), but you know I couldn't leave the state without swinging by a local shelter. That is exactly where I fell in love with this gorgeous 5-month-old flame point Siamese kitten.

This resilient little guy has already been through so much. He was brought into the shelter after being attacked by another animal, leaving him with severe cranial and back injuries. At first, he wasn’t even able to walk. 💔
But against the odds, time and his own fighting spirit have worked total miracles! He has gained his mobility back, his prognosis is incredible, and the vet anticipates a probable full recovery. He is technically considered special needs right now just because he needs a little extra time to cross the finish line.

You’ll notice he’s rocking a cone in the video—that’s just because an old ear injury turned into a super itchy bacterial infection that we are currently treating, and he’s already fully cleared a bout of ringworm!

Through every single needle, vet visit, and setback, he has remained the absolute sweetest, most affectionate lap kitty you could ever meet. He is wonderful with kids, dogs, and other cats.
Naturally, since he’s a fellow redhead and came from my concert trip, we named him Ed!

Ed is officially available for adoption and ready to find his happy ending.

We love getting updates from our adopters, and this one absolutely warmed our hearts! Remember sweet little Sterling?

She was adopted a few months ago, but since she was still too young for her surgery at the time, her adopter signed our Spay and Neuter Contract.

Her adopter just sent over her proof of surgery along with this wonderful message:

"I ended up renaming her to Arya, she is so sweet and she is a really great pet. Hands down my best purchase! Thanks again for making this possible."

At our rescue, we firmly believe that early spay and neuter is not ideal for an animal's long-term health and development.

Because we choose to wait until they are developmentally ready, we place immense trust in our adopters to follow through with the agreed-upon surgery when the time is right. If we ever feel a potential adopter won't uphold that promise, we simply do not adopt the animal out to them. To support this and encourage responsible pet ownership, we also reimburse a portion of the adoption fee back to the adopter once they provide proof that the surgery is complete and follow up as well!

Arya’s update is testament to why this system works for us. We are so incredibly happy to hear that she is thriving, deeply loved, and being the "best pet" ever!
