Sundays Are For The Moms
As horse show moms, we spend the week taking our young riders to and from the barn for their weekly lessons and ride time, all while we are still juggling our daily work schedules and/or our other children’s sports schedule too! While at the barn, we jump in and help where we can, whether it is cleaning up after their horse or being jump crew for the lesson. As our children stand in the middle of the arena listening to their instructor on what this week’s lesson is going to be about, we visit with the other moms and discuss this week’s barn activities and upcoming events.
During horse show season, the weekly lessons turn into two, sometimes three, to prepare for the upcoming horse shows. On Saturdays, we are up at the crack of dawn to not only prepare our children for the show but also their 1000lb best friend! As moms, we then become grooms, counselors, maids, and staff. Most shows are a hurry-up-and-wait type schedule! We help our child dress in their best show clothes and that they are groomed to look their best while rushing to get them to the entry gate just to wait their turn.
As the child enters the ring, we are taking a clean rag to dust off the dust that has collected on the horse and rider, all while being their counselor and talking them through their nerves. We watch as the child makes it into the ring, nail-biting nerves; some moms even ride the horse with their child on the sidelines (imaginary). Instantly, we wash the nerves or whatever feelings we are having so that we can be what our child needs once they leave the ring. Depending on how the ride went, sometimes we are cheering for a ride well done or drying tears of frustration for a ride that didn’t go as hoped. We do this week in and week out because all of us are just horse-crazy girls too and love every minute of it, the dirt, the grime, the horse sweat, and the exhaustion.
When the week is done, us moms get to have our day too. Here at Legacy Farm, Sundays are for the moms. The moms who spend all week doing things for our young riders. Sundays are the days we switch roles with our kids; they get to be jump crew and grooms helping us get ready for our lesson! Every Sunday, our group of moms gets together with our trainer and has our jump lesson! It is full of laughter, encouragement, and a chance for us to chase our dreams too. There is nothing better than riding and showing right alongside our children and sharing the love of horses and the amazing things they can do for the mind and soul!
