We’re excited to welcome Dr. Paxton Russell to the A Pet’s Place Animal Hospital team in June! Dr. Paxton brings warmth, expertise, and a genuine passion for veterinary medicine to our practice. A graduate of Colorado State University, she’s thrilled to be back in Northern Colorado and is especially excited to get to know the Longmont community—both two-legged and four!

Originally from Florida and raised in Montana, Dr. Paxton enjoys hiking, fishing, and spending time outdoors with his dachshund, Dooey. When she’s not caring for patients, you might find her baking up something delicious or snapping photos of Colorado’s beautiful landscapes.

Dr. Paxton is passionate about forming lifelong bonds with pets and their owners, and we know you'll love having her as part of your pet's care team.

Starting June 16th, stop in and say hello to Dr. Russell or schedule your pet’s next visit today!

Ticks are everywhere already!

Pierre, a small mixed breed dog, living within the city of Longmont recently presented for acute onset of paralysis of all four limbs. During his exam an engorged tick was found under his tail. The conclusion was that he had Tick Paralysis. Within 24 hours of removing the tick, Pierre was back to normal. He also started on Bravecto, an oral flea and tick preventative that lasts for 3 months.

Tick Paralysis is a serious but often treatable condition in dogs caused by certain species of ticks that release their neurotoxins into the bloodstream while feeding. This toxin affects the nervous system, leading to progressive weakness and, if left untreated, potentially life-threatening respiratory failure.

Signs of tick paralysis:

-Weakness in the hind legs which gradually moves forward

-Wobbly or uncoordinated movements

-Loss of ability to stand or walk

-Change in bark or difficulty swallowing

-Paralysis that worsens over hours to days

-Respiratory distress

In the last several years we have continued to see an increase in dogs infested with fleas and ticks. The only month we have not seen fleas or ticks is January! Fleas and ticks can transmit diseases, including Erhlichia, Tularemia, and Plague, without you ever seeing them. As we have seen, they can also transmit dangerous toxins. If your dog(s) or outdoor cats are not on a flea and tick preventative, please reach out to discuss the options available to you and your pet.
