🐾 Happy National Greyhound Day! 🐾

Did you know the Greyhound is one of the oldest dog breeds on the planet? These elegant hounds date back to Ancient Egypt roughly 5,000 years ago, where they were used by pharaohs for hunting — and were considered so special, they could only be owned by royalty until around 1700. Shakespeare even wrote them into Henry V! 👑
Fast forward to today, and these gentle giants are famous for their speed — Greyhounds are the second fastest land animals on earth, right behind the cheetah. ⚡ But don't let that fool you — most Greyhounds are total couch potatoes at heart. 🛋️

A few breed-specific things we love to remind Greyhound families about:
🩸 Greyhounds have unique bloodwork — their normal ranges for certain values (like hematocrit and creatinine) differ from other breeds, so always let your vet know!
💉 They're sensitive to anesthesia due to their low body fat and lean muscle mass
🌡️ With minimal body fat and a short coat, they can overheat or get cold quickly — especially important in Colorado weather!
🦷 Dental disease is very common in the breed — regular cleanings make a big difference.

Today we celebrate one of the most brilliant, loyal, and fluffy dogs on the planet — the Shetland Sheepdog! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A little history 📖 Shelties hail from the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, bred to herd sheep in harsh conditions. Their compact size was intentional — limited island resources meant smaller dogs were easier to keep! They've gone by many names: Shetland Collie, Dwarf Scotch Shepherd, and even "Toonie Dog" (Scottish for farm). Calvin Coolidge even had one in the White House, named Calamity Jane for her love of getting dirty 😂

🐾🏅 Olympic Games Recap: Foreign Body Challenge 🏅🐾

One of our favorite events this year? The Guess the Foreign Body challenge — and WOW, did our teams bring their A-game! 🎉

Each team had to identify mysterious "foreign bodies" hidden in a very realistic (and very jiggly 🟢) dog vomit simulation. Spoiler: it was jello. The objects? Very real. The dedication? Olympic-level.

Every single team knocked it out of the park — turns out we've got some seriously talented foreign body detectives on our hands! 🔍🐶

We couldn't be prouder of this team. 💛

Today — celebrated every last Saturday in May — is dedicated to one of the most loveable, silky-eared breeds in the world, and we just had to give them a proper shoutout! 🥰

A little history: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel descended from the Toy Spaniel, which was especially popular between the 16th and 18th centuries. It wasn't until 1928 that the first official breed club was formed in England and the name "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel" was given to this beloved companion breed. King Charles II was such a devoted fan of the breed that he was actually accused of neglecting his royal duties because he spent so much time with his dogs. We honestly get it, Your Majesty. 👑

Fun facts you might not know:
🎨 The beauty of the breed has been captured on canvas by famous artists including Pierre Auguste Renoir, Thomas Gainsborough, and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
🐕 A flat face means King Charles Spaniel; a muzzle means Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — that's how you tell them apart!

A word from our vets 🩺:
Cavaliers are wonderful companions, but they do come with some breed-specific health considerations every owner should know about. The most common is mitral valve disease (MVD), which can lead to heart failure at a very young age — MVD may appear as early as two years of age and accounts for nearly 50% of all Cavalier deaths. Early detection and aggressive therapy may extend both the length and quality of life. Regular cardiac screenings are a must for this breed!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember those who gave everything in service to our country.🇺🇸

🚫Please note that A Pet's Place Animal Hospital will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of the holiday. We'll be back to caring for your beloved companions on Tuesday, May 26th.

🔸️Cookout foods like corn cobs, onions, grapes, and cooked bones can be dangerous — keep plates out of reach!
🔸️Fireworks and loud gatherings can be stressful for pets. Make sure they have a quiet, secure space indoors.
🔸️With more guests around, double-check that gates and doors are closed so no one sneaks out.
🔸️Keep lighter fluid, matches, and citronella products away from curious noses.
