It can look scary because they bare their teeth, but the rest of the body tells the real story. A smile, or submissive grin, features squinted eyes, a relaxed or wiggling body, and ears pulled back flat against the head, showing teeth as a non-threatening gesture of deference. Conversely, a real snarl comes with hard, staring eyes, tensed muscles, ears pointed forward or pinned straight back in fear, and a muzzle retracted upward in a specific, aggressive warning.
