Kochia, a fast-growing, drought-tolerant w**d, has been found in Atchison County soybean fields.

Why it matters:
- Competes for resources, potentially reducing yields by up to 70%.
- Produces up to 30,000 seeds per plant, can spread as tumblew**ds and may be herbicide-resistant.

Recommendations:
- Early detection and removal through spot spraying or hand removal.
- Use crop rotation, tillage, fall cover crops, and apply pre-emergence herbicides.
- Target small, newly emerged plants to prevent seed production.

New businesses open each year, but a comparable number of older firms often close. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau provides insights into business entries and exits, known as business churn.

Between 2020 and 2024, Missouri averaged 24,400 new business applications annually—a 30% jump from the 2015–2019 average of 18,700. That’s a strong signal of growing entrepreneurial energy across the state.

While applications show intent, actual business openings and closures tell the full story.

In 2022, urban Missouri saw the highest startup rate in health care and social assistance but also the most exits (38).

Meanwhile, rural counties led in new construction and retail businesses, outpacing urban areas in those sectors.
