Before the trick-or-treating starts tomorrow, take a quick look around the house from your pet’s point of view. 🎃

Keep candy bowls, treat bags, and kids’ Halloween buckets up high and out of reach. Remind children not to share their candy with pets, and do not leave wrappers where curious dogs or cats can grab them.

A little preparation tonight can help prevent an unexpected veterinary visit tomorrow.

Happy National Cat Day! 🐱

Cats may be independent, opinionated, and fully convinced they run the house, but they can also become a huge part of the family.

Today is a great excuse to celebrate the cats who greet us at the door, sleep in the most inconvenient places, supervise everything we do, and somehow make us earn their affection.

Pets and livestock occasionally cross paths with wildlife, and sometimes those encounters happen faster than anyone expects.

Bats, skunks, and other wild animals can create a risk of bites and disease exposure.

Do not handle wildlife that is acting unusually, appears sick, or is unexpectedly easy to approach.

Keeping rabies vaccinations current is one of the most important ways to protect pets.

If your animal has contact with a bat, skunk, or other suspicious wildlife, contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Small punctures can be deceptive.

A bite, nail injury, or sharp object may leave only a tiny opening on the surface while causing more damage underneath.

Watch for swelling, heat, drainage, tenderness, limping, or a wound that worsens instead of improving.

Pets also tend to lick sore areas, which can worsen irritation and infection.

If you are unsure whether a wound needs veterinary attention, give us a call.

Bringing home new livestock is exciting, but immediately turning new animals out with the rest of the herd can introduce more than a new face.

New animals may carry illnesses or parasites without showing obvious signs of illness.

A quarantine period gives you time to observe appetite, manure, coughing, nasal discharge, lameness, and overall behavior before introducing them to established animals.

It also gives you an opportunity to review vaccination, deworming, and health history.

A little separation on the front end can help protect the animals you already have.

Halloween candy tends to end up everywhere.

On the counter.

In backpacks.

In bedrooms.

In purses.

And somehow always on the floor.

Chocolate, sugar-free products containing xylitol, raisins, and certain nuts can all cause problems for pets. Candy wrappers and packaging can also cause trouble if swallowed.

If your pet gets into the candy stash, save the package if possible and call your veterinarian with the product and approximate amount eaten.

Your pet can celebrate Halloween just fine with their usual treats. 🎃
