“Not eating” does not have the same meaning for every animal.

A dog that skips one meal but otherwise acts normal may be different from a cat that stops eating, a horse refusing feed or a cow separating from the herd. Age, other symptoms, pregnancy status, water intake and how long the animal has refused food all matter.

Call sooner when appetite loss is accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, abdominal discomfort, reduced manure, difficulty breathing or unusual behavior. When you are uncertain, the clinic can help determine how urgently the animal needs to be examined.

Calling about a sick farm animal? A few observations can help our veterinary team understand the situation more quickly.

Be ready to share the animal’s species, age and approximate weight, when the symptoms began, and whether it is eating, drinking, urinating and passing bowels normally. Let us know about pregnancy or recent birth, current medications and whether any other animals are affected.

Photos or short videos of abnormal breathing, walking or behavior can also be useful when they can be taken safely.

You do not need to diagnose the problem before calling. Tell us what you are seeing, and we will help determine the next step.

A small opening on a horse can hide a much deeper injury.

Call your veterinarian for puncture wounds, heavy bleeding, wounds near an eye or joint, visible foreign material, significant swelling or injuries of uncertain depth. Nail punctures to the hoof and wounds caused by fencing deserve particular attention even when the surface damage looks minor.

Keep the horse calm and avoid pouring harsh chemicals or unapproved products into a fresh wound. A quick photo may help the clinic understand the location and severity while you arrange care.

A full trough does not necessarily mean a horse is drinking normally.

Check and clean water containers regularly, especially during hot weather. Changes such as reduced manure, dry or tacky gums, poor appetite, unusual tiredness or decreased water intake may indicate that something is wrong.

Know what is normal for your horse. A noticeable change in drinking, eating or manure production is worth a call to your veterinarian rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.

Since opening our doors, we have had the privilege of caring for animals of all sizes and supporting the people who care for them. From puppies and kittens to horses, cattle and backyard flocks, every patient has become part of our clinic’s story.

Flies gathering around an animal may be more than an annoyance.

Check closely for small wounds, irritated skin, soiled hair or areas affected by diarrhea. Injuries can be difficult to see beneath a thick coat, and hot weather may allow a minor problem to become much more serious.

Keep wounds clean, follow your veterinarian’s treatment instructions and check outdoor animals regularly. Call the clinic when you find swelling, drainage, odor, increasing pain or a wound that is deeper than it first appeared.
