It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often…

“Can you train prey drive out of a dog?”

The short answer is…

No.

But that’s not bad news.

You can’t remove instinct, but you can teach your dog how to respond to it.

A dog may still notice the rabbit.

It may still feel the urge to chase.

But with good training, it can learn that choosing you is more rewarding than charging across a field.

That’s the difference between instinct and behaviour.

Remember…

You’re not removing prey drive, you’re building self-control.

Great training doesn’t fight genetics.

It works with them.

By building engagement, rewarding the right choices, recognising the early signs of arousal and providing appropriate outlets, we help our dogs make better decisions.

Genetics load the gun. Learning pulls the trigger.

“Resource guarding is a learned behavior.”

Wrong. Resource guarding is normal communication.

Words have definitions for a reason.

Resource guarding simply means a Dog feels the need to guard a resource.

That is not dominance.
That is not manipulation.
That is not bullying or any other human story placed onto the Dog.

A Dog who does not feel safe, clear, or protected around food, toys, space, or other resources will guard them.

That is normal.

What works instead:

Make resources safe and predictable.
Remove competition and unnecessary pressure.
Meet the Dog’s needs consistently.
Handle the environment so the Dog no longer has to.

Once a Dog understands that what belongs to them is secure, their needs will continue to be met, and the human will handle the moment, there is nothing left to guard.

You cannot fix normal.

You resolve the reason it is happening.
