🐾 APOTHECATTERY EDUCATIONAL CORNER: FELINE PANLEUKOPENIA 🐾
Did you know that even indoor-only cats can be exposed to potentially deadly viruses? 🐱
With recent concerns surrounding feline panleukopenia (FPV) in Florida shelters, we wanted to take a moment to educate our feline families about this highly contagious illness and how to protect their beloved companions. 💚
🦠 WHAT IS FELINE PANLEUKOPENIA?
Also known as feline distemper, panleukopenia is a serious viral infection caused by feline parvovirus. It attacks the intestinal tract, bone marrow, and immune system. It can be especially dangerous for young kittens and unvaccinated cats.
🏡 BUT MY CAT NEVER GOES OUTSIDE!
Unfortunately, indoor cats aren't completely immune to exposure!
The virus can potentially enter your home through:
🐾 Veterinary visits and contaminated equipment
🐾 Dogs tracking contaminated material indoors on their paws or fur
🐾 Shoes, clothing, and hands
🐾 New cats or kittens entering the household
🐾 Contaminated carriers, bedding, litter boxes, and grooming supplies
Here's what makes this virus particularly concerning: It can survive in the environment for a year or longer under favorable conditions, and many ordinary household cleaners won't destroy it!
🚨 SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR:
🐱 Sudden lethargy or weakness
🐱 Loss of appetite
🐱 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐱 Fever and dehydration
🐱 Rapid decline, especially in kittens
Some cats may show minimal symptoms initially, so early recognition is extremely important.
🌿 HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR FELINE FAMILY?
✅ Discuss appropriate FVRCP vaccinations with your veterinarian.
✅ Remove outdoor shoes before entering your cats' living areas.
✅ Practice good hygiene after visiting veterinary clinics, shelters, or handling unfamiliar animals.
✅ Use disinfectants specifically proven effective against parvoviruses.
✅ Quarantine new feline arrivals and arrange veterinary health assessments.
✅ Seek immediate veterinary care if suspicious symptoms develop.
💚 A NOTE FROM APOTHECATTERY
As a home-based cattery, we take the health and well-being of our feline companions very seriously. Maintaining a controlled environment, practicing responsible sanitation, and being mindful of potential exposure are important parts of protecting our cats.
While no environment is entirely risk-free, education and preventative measures can make a tremendous difference.
Our goal in sharing this information isn't to create fear, but to encourage awareness. Whether you have one beloved house cat or a home full of furry companions, understanding how infectious diseases spread is an important part of responsible pet ownership.
Remember: Prevention is powerful, awareness matters, and early veterinary intervention can save lives! 🐾❤️
