What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with College of Southern Maryland 's Day of Service and a Therapeutic Recreational Mini Retreat! πŸŒŽπŸ’šπŸ΄

Our fantastic CSM volunteers picked up trash along the river trail and helped us transfer some of the last remaining hay out of the trailer and into the loft. Thank you for all that you did for our foundation, park, and community!

Then it was Greenwell Foundation's turn to give back to our volunteers with a Therapeutic Recreational Mini Retreat. The group connected with the land and animals they helped care for with a short spring hike, plenty of horse connection time, and even a yoga session with My Happy Yoga Place and a special guest, Marvolo the barn cat!

We want to give a special thank you to our Hometown Hero Sponsor, Bayside Chevrolet for making this mini retreat happen!

The International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO (IAMAW) Local Lodge 4 kicked off National Volunteer Week a little early with a clean up on Saturday of the Knott Lodge backyard. 🌿

The group primarily work at NAS Patuxent River, William W. Winpisinger Education Technology Center and Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Thank you to our Board Member, Mark Duvall, for helping organize the effort and everyone who came this weekend. We are so grateful for all of the work you did and we are so happy with the transformation! We know the summer campers will enjoy all of the new space to play, tie dye, and make smores this summer.

Thank you! 🌟

Content warning: animal health needs, eye condition (last photo)

Is that a pirate in the horse field? Nope! It's Cash, and he has a health update for you!

Last fall, Cash started experiencing a painful inflammation in his right eye, and he eventually developed glaucoma. Since his eye did not respond to treatment, his owner and the veterinary team decided to surgically remove it. Cash's surgery went smoothly, and after the procedure, he wore a protective eye mask for two weeks to protect his sutures and let his eye heal.

While this may sound dramatic, horses adapt very well to only having one eye, and most can easily return to their routines. Cash is doing very well, and his quirky personality is still intact! Pretty soon, we will be gradually reintroducing him to light work within our equestrian program.

Here at Greenwell, we always give our horses the best medical care possible, and we deeply appreciate the vets who help us care for them. Thank you to Dr. Repenning, Cash’s primary doctor, and Dr. Kravchenko from Tidewater Veterinary Clinic for performing Cash's surgery and helping him recover!

Yesterday, our staff had a wonderful time at the 15th annual Nonprofit Institute conference at CSM!

During the keynote presentation, our executive director, Maria McDonald, contributed to presenting the Nonprofit Institute's new five-year strategic plan and discussed the importance of meaningful connections in the nonprofit world.

Danielle Barber, our communications and marketing intern, received a certificate of appreciation for her past work with the Nonprofit Institute! She previously completed a Work-Based Learning internship before acting as the organization's outreach specialist. Congratulations, Danielle! πŸŽ‰

Our staff enjoyed attended the numerous breakout sessions to learn about artificial intelligence, resilience, fundraising, leadership, wellness, and more. Thank you to the Nonprofit Institute at CSM for such an educational and rewarding day!

Did you know that horses need to get their teeth checked by a dentist every year?

Since their teeth wear down unevenly as they chew on food, horses may start feeling pain and/or discomfort in their mouths as a result. During an appointment, the dentist looks for and gets rid of any problems causing it.

Foreign objects stuck inside a horse's mouth is one cause of pain and/or discomfort. During last week's appointment, the dentist found and removed a stick lodged in the roof of Carmen's mouth!

Thank you to Equine Dental Solutions w/ Katie Herman for checking on our horses and keeping them healthy and comfortable!

Good morning!

This , we want to know, what is something you plan to do to enjoy the warming weather?

We asked our nature support and nature volunteer coordinator, Jess, this question, and here's what she told us: "I'm planning to spend more time outdoors with my dog, Murphy! We're going to go on hikes, play outside, and take selfies together!"

We discovered so many signs of spring at our last Watershed Heroes session! 🌹

This group of Watershed Heroes spent time outside enjoying this beautiful section of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. We looked and listened for birds as we hiked the River Trail and we heard lots of Carolina Wrens, saw an American Crow, and watched an Osprey with a fish fly right above us! πŸ¦…

We talked about the different types of birds and the reason they make different sounds. Then we played a quick game pretending to be birds hunting for food. On our hike we also found lots of spring flowers like this garden grape hyacinth, two black snakes, and many different insects. It was a great group and a fun day! β˜€
