Flounder Cat Bonding with pets through training and enrichment

Food has always been an issue for me. I've researched so many foods and there are SO many brands. Every time I turn around, there is a new brand it seems. Which ones can I trust? What should I be looking at? So many questions. I have these questions about human food, too, to be honest.

In my search for answers, I did happen upon a great dry food, treats, and an epic way to help dental hygiene. I'm hoping to help some of you who may have the same issue but don't have the time to research.

We all knew as soon as Flounder started learning how to play the ukulele that Mouse Toy was going to be next! Luckily I was thinking ahead and added a tiny ukulele to Flo's birthday wishlist and one of our very loving followers bought it for him quite literally just in time!

Flounder asked for Mouse Toy to play the ukulele and the tiny ukulele arrived the same afternoon! Unheard of!

So now Mouse Toy is perfecting his ukulele skills alongside his bestie.

In honor of National "Hug your cat" day, I present to you: the day Flounder taught me how to properly adjust her new hug to fit her comfortably! With buttons AND such clear body language!

We have been through SO many different hugs (harnesses), and she has always been able to slip out of them, and none of them were comfortable for her but she loves going out on walks so much, what's a girl to do?

Luckily I found this one and once I adjusted it to fit her properly, she LOVES it now. It's so much more comfortable on her, it fits her perfectly, and in rare moments when a scary thing is present and I don't have the backpack with me: she can't slip out of it! It's the only hug this fish will tolerate on National Hug your Cat Day.

*Fun Fact: Her Pocahontas hug is crocheted around one of these harnesses, so it still feels just like the hug she loves and wears every day - just with some Disney Princess flare!

As I become busier with work, Flounder is coming up with new ways to get what she wants - including suggesting that she goes outside by herself. Obviously that was a hard no, and obviously I stopped what I was doing to take her out for a walk.

This time of year is so difficult in FlounderLand.

I've been getting asked if Flo actually uses the buttons on the paddleboard.

Her previous button setup on the old paddleboard was only 3 buttons (all done, swim, beach) and she used them rarely, but I had a difficult time believing they were intentional presses because she was so wobbly on the board.

With this new button setup on the new paddleboard, she now has 6 buttons (safe, dangerous, swim, beach, all done, and ugh) I chose these words carefully based on which concepts are most important to both of us while on adventures. UGH was a must so she has a healthy way to let me know she's not happy with my decisions. Obviously.

Since adding the new setup, she has been using it a lot more and definitely more intentionally. Now my issue is getting her presses on camera. I'm not always filming or able to film when I'm paddling, so I have already missed a lot of really clear presses which is unfortunate. If anyone has any suggestions for this, I'm all ears!

I love that Flo is so open and honest with me and willing to communicate her thoughts ALL the time. This scenario is one where we were able to make sure we were on the same page before the door even opened.

Did she intend to ti**le in the moat? I can't say for sure but if I had to guess: ABSOLUTELY! She wants to ti**le in the moat SO bad!

After we had this discussion, did she try to ti**le in the moat? No, she didn't. She did ti**le in the grass, although definitely not as exciting I'm sure. I really love that we can identify problems before they become problems and talk about them, which in turn corrects the problem before it even happens.

I should have seen this coming, but kudos to me for still giving it a try!

To be honest, I may have only remembered the fun, magical fairy scenes and may have forgotten about the very scary deforestation scene. I promise you I'll never forget about that scene ever again.

So here's how it went:

Not even 10 minutes in (I think it was around 8 minutes), Flo presses "Pocahontas". Right. So then I talk her into giving it a try because it's kind of like Pocahontas...so she did.

Cue the deforestation scene. Girlfriend had so much going on in her brain she started having 2 conversations at once. So here I believe what is happening is she's asking for help for the trees that are coming down on the TV AND she's also asking where Meeko is, but I think she was so passionate about both things she was combining all of her presses about 2 subjects at once.

You can see after she presses "Christmas Tree", it looks like she had a change of thought, then presses "Meeko" and then again after she presses "Help", you can see (it's clear to me anyway) that she had another change of thought and went back to Meeko, then presses "Where".

This one really fascinated me because this is something she has done before but I wasn't convinced enough that it wasn't her losing her mind. Watching her body language here it is much clearer that she is actually having 2 conversations at once.

Anyway, Fern Gully was a no go, very unfortunately for me.

Movie she has already seen:
Moana (both live action and animated)
Lion King (both live action and animated)
Finding Nemo
Finding Dory
Little Mermaid (both live action and animated)
Lady and the Tramp
Aristocats
Aladdin (both live action and animated)
Beauty and the Beast (both live action and animated)
Hocus Pocus (1 & 2)
Flow
Bluey
Lilo and Stitch ((both live action and animated)
and all of them. Please scroll back for other movie reviews.

We don't usually stay up past 9:30pm so this isn't typically an issue, however on the weekends, we will stay up slightly past our designated bedtime here and there.

And this is why we can never do that again...
..the Christmas tree always goes to bed at the same time whether we're up or not. Flounder can not be expected to tell me fascinating stories about animals if her Christmas tree isn't lit. This is bogus treatment of a beautiful fish princess!

How did this end? Well, now the Christmas tree has a new bedtime of 10:30pm just to give us a buffer should we need it in the future.

Don't waste precious time when Mouse Toy has a request. Seriously. If Mouse Toy needs something, he needs it NOW!

But for real: It has recently occurred to me that Mouse Toy's requests are always quite urgent whereas Flounder's requests are more nonchalant. I seem to have more time to fulfill Flounder's requests (in general), whereas Mouse Toy needs everything NOW!

I find this interesting and still not sure if it's her using him to get what she wants thinking I will prioritize Mouse Toy's needs over hers (because he has medical issues), or if it's she doesn't want to come off as bossy but it's ok if Mouse Toy does? Not sure, but still very interesting to think about.
