Preventive Veterinary Care

This is a proactive approach to veterinary care. It is aimed at maintaining our pets health and preventing common diseases some of which can eventually turn out to be more serious.

Some of the common preventive measures carried out during routine exams include...

πŸ’‰ Vaccinations - This helps to protect against infectious diseases like Rabies, Parvovirus, Lyme and Leptospirosis
πŸͺ± Parasite control - The most common parasites include Fleas, Ticks, heart worm and intestinal parasites.
🍽️ Nutrition and weight management - Just like in humans, feeding our pets high quality food in the right proportion helps them maintain ideal weight and body condition which helps to elongate their life.
🩻 Regular screening/diagnostics - This helps to detect poor body condition or certain disease conditions affecting the various /specific parts of the body. This may include blood work, radiographs or ultrasound
🩹Spaying/Neuter - This helps to reduce certain diseases, cancers and behavioral problems.
🦷Dental care - "The mouth is the window to the body" - This means that oral health can reflect the overall health of our pet. Oral issues like gum disease can be an indicator of systemic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, etc. Oral infections can also travel to other parts of the body, causing inflammation and other complications.

These measures may appear initially to be unnecessary and costly, but they help to detect problems early, save the cost of emergency care, prevent zoonotic diseases ( Diseases that can be transferred from pets to humans) and improve the pets quality of life and longevity.

Sweet boy Lincoln here got into a whole bunch of chocolate this past weekend 🍫 Luckily it was not enough to cause serious toxicity, and we are happy to report he is back to his normal self at home 😊

If your pet gets into chocolate, we may recommend you start by calling animal poison control. They are the specialists when it comes to anything and everything toxic! They will best advise you on what to do after your pet consumes something toxic or potentially toxic. There are even occasions where they tell you you're in the clear and you don't need to bring your pet in to a Vet, so it is always worth a call!!

Who doesn't love a purr-ito?? You may hear a Vet Tech say that we "burrito" your cat... and what does that mean?? 🌯 It means this! We swaddle your cat up in a blanket or a towel to keep them calm and still for things like blood draws or radiographs. It is much more effective and much less stressful than scruffing your cat (which we always avoid!!) 🐱

There are a few things we worry about with cats around the holidays.

1. Decorations. We see a lot of cats who ate things they shouldn't have, like tinsel or ribbons. They often think these things are toys, and end up chewing or even consuming these non edible things- which can in turn cause GI upset, or even an obstruction. If you have a Christmas tree, keep your decorations high up, or even consider skipping the tinsel for the sake of your cat.

2. Toxins. There are a lot of holiday plants that can be toxic to your cat if they chew/eat or even just get the pollen on their fur. Mistletoe, Lilies, Amaryllis, Evergreen, Holly, and Poinsettia are just a few of the more common plants we see around this time of year, and they are all toxic to cats.

3. Stress. A lot of people may not even think about it, but your cat may be extra stressed this time of year (who isn't??). Having more visitors than usual, having a tree or extra decorations in the home, or even just feeding off of your stress can all contribute to a stressed out kitty. Plan ahead and keep an eye on your cat and note signs of stress.

We love cats here at Brijon! If all else fails and your kitty still falls ill, we are always here to help. Walk in, call ahead or book an appointment online!
