Email update: We are continuing to work on our email problems. Thank you all for your patience with this process. That being said, my practice management system is now making recommendations that I update my jiggle bib MCP protocol by engaging proton pump SGME and setting it to NSCA settings after properly establishing a WIKI giblet muffin application and password.

Seriously - that's how I read the instructions, but I am pretty sure that wasn't right. Let's just say, I am far better at surgery than internet, webpage thingamajigs. Are there any clients out there who might be able to help me with the last details of this email upgrade? I could pay you in cheesecake.... or some other method to be determined.

The following are the directions that my practice management software sent me, saying, "just a few more simple steps and you will be all set up."

Recommendations for better Email Deliverability
Recommendations for better Email Deliverability
Learn how to optimize your clinics email deliverability to clients.

Email deliverability is key to making sure your messages actually reach your customers’ inboxes—not their spam folders. For small and large businesses, every email counts—whether it’s a promotion, appointment reminder, or important update.

For Optimal Email delivery, DaySmart Vet Recommends the following:

Verify your email address with Amazon Simple Email Service - automatic in our app, but you need to click on the link that is sent from Amazon. (I think this is all done)

After entering an email address with a domain you own, you should receive 3 keys from Amazon web services that need to be added to your domain's DNS records that tell mail servers that your domain allows DaySmart Vet to send email from Amazon Web Services using an email from your domain and that this is legitimate and not spam. This is called DomainKey Identified Mail (DKIM). It is important that you find the person who knows how to update your DNS records - if not the owner or technical person, could be your webmaster. (Unfortunately, I am my "webmaster")

Add SPF entry that explicitly says that you allow email from Amazon's mail service. This is also a DNS entry and can be made/checked/updated at the time of adding the above DKIM keys. It's important to note that a strict SPF entry without the proper contents can result in all of your email being rejected and not delivered to customers' inboxes.

Set up or check DMARC - Domain-based Message Authentication - this is also a TXT record in DNS, and if misconfigured it can cause email from DaySmart Vet to be rejected.

Here's a basic DMARC dns record with brief explanation:

hostname: _dmarc

type: TXT

value: "v=DMARC1; p=none; pct=100"

This says, "domain message authentication uses DMARC1 version and rejects no email sent from other domains and this policy applies to 100% of messages"

Email deliverability best practices change as time goes by. As spam email has increased, mail servers and mail providers continue to make it more challenging to deliver legitimate email. We want to ensure that you have the best email deliverability possible and will continue to work with and update you as rules change.

More details on SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

What is SPF? A way that owners of domains can add a line in their DNS records that whitelist email from specific mail servers

Why is it important? We know that all of our customers want the highest email deliverability possible, and due to the never-ending war between spammers and legitimate email services, it will continue to get harder to prove that email is legitimate. Addressing DKIM AND SPF is currently the best solution for our customers to ensure highest deliverability rates. There is no need for us to generate any keys to use SPF, just customer adding a whitelist for amazon's mail servers.

Summary
Customers are encouraged to add "include:amazonses.com" to their SPF txt record in their DNS so that email SPF validation will PASS for email sent out of Vetter to their customers. We still encourage customers to configure DKIM too.

Before:
mobilevet.vet text = "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all"

After adding support for email from Vetter:
mobilevet.vet text = "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:amazonses.com ~all"

1. Navigate to DNS Management and select the record type as 'TXT'

image.png

2. Once the record type is selected as TXT, add the txt value in the field as shown below, ensure to add include include:amazonses.com before the all so that it look like include:amazonses.com -all

image.png

3. Click add to add the record.
Details:
Most domains have some non-hostname DNS records that store data. These are called 'text records' - TXT, for short. An SPF TXT entry is not a requirement, but many email services do look for it.

How to find the SPF records for a domain:

open a terminal/console/cmd window and type:
nslookup -type=txt domain.com

Look for a line like:
domain.com text = "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all"

What does it mean? v=spf1 = value for spf, include:foo.bar.com = explicitly confirm that email from this domain is allowed, all = soft enforcement, -all = strick enforcement. Having an SPF txt record like above says, "we confirm that email sent from google is valid. Anything else... we don't confirm". If the ending was "-all" instead of "~all", that means, "we confirm that email sent from google is valid. Anything else is INVALD and should NOT BE DELIEVERED".

Recently, we've seen some clinics add strict SPF rules because they were prompted to do so by a security audit or they believe they're improving security. If a clinic says, "suddenly, NONE of our emails are being delivered!!!!!" check their SPF record for a "-all" and no entry for amazonses.com which is what Vetter needs... The solution to this is for them to ADD include:amazonses.com in the middle of their txt record like so:

before:
domain.com text = "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com -all"

after
domain.com text = "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com include:amazonses.com -all"

Good Morning! We are excited to announce that we are looking to expand our team! If you, or someone you know, is interested in a part time veterinary technician position, we would love to talk with them. This position will be further outlined and defined by the right candidate. At the moment, we would love a technician who has the availability and experience to monitor anesthesia and surgery and is also willing to participate in house calls/home euthanasia appointments. As we are a small team, we can be very flexible, working around mothers hours. We have options for completing SOME of the work from home at times convenient for our next team member. The ideal candidate would be a team player, strong on client relationship building, looking for a long term place to land and have a good understanding of the business of veterinary medicine from many perspectives. Because we are a small team, we all have a hand in client care, scheduling, prescription refills, surgical care and follow up and simple things like laundry, filing and stocking inventory. Please send an email/resume and references to [email protected] if you are interested!

EMAIL UPDATE!!!!! IMPORTANT INFORMATION
As many of you know, we are having trouble with our business emails going to spam instead of inboxes for our clients. We are working on correcting this problem, however, it will require that we CHANGE OUR EMAIL.

Please add the email: [email protected] to your contacts for us.

Over the next few weeks we will be transitioning to this account. For now, we ask that you send any emails to us at BOTH email addresses. We are hoping that the transition will be complete by January 1, at which point we will only be monitoring the old gmail address once weekly or so.

Current/Phasing out email: [email protected]

November is Senior Pet Health Month.
In order to get the "whole picture" we typically recommend getting routine labs to see what is going on internally with your pets. These labs typically look at things like liver function, kidney function, red blood cells, white blood cells, proteins, sugars and more. This is a great way to assess overall health and detect potential medical conditions. These tests can be done for pets of any age, but are more important for older pets!
If you would like to schedule lab work for your pet, give us a call at 781-336-7462 to schedule your appointment!
Otherwise, use our online pharmacy to keep your pets up to date with their medications and supplements!

Thankful for all the working dogs who make our community safer and keep our human officers a little farther away from danger.

Early this morning, Deputy Joe Silva and his partner Zero assisted Hingham Police after a stolen motor vehicle crashed, and the suspect fled on foot.

After a quick briefing with Hingham PD, Deputy Silva deployed Zero on a track — and it didn’t take long for this dynamic duo to make a great find! 🔍💪

Zero located a firearm hidden under a parked vehicle, helping take a dangerous weapon off the street and making the community just a little bit safer.

Awesome work, Joe and Zero! 👏🐕🦺
And great teamwork as always with our friends at Hingham PD. 👮♂️🤝

I know the exact pressure it takes to crack a rib during CPR. But last Tuesday, I learned a patient’s silence can break a doctor’s soul.

His name was David Chen, but on my screen, he was "Male, 82, Congestive Heart Failure, Room 402." I spent seven minutes with him that morning. Seven minutes to check his vitals, listen to the fluid in his lungs, adjust his diuretics, and type 24 required data points into his Electronic Health Record. He tried to tell me something, gesturing toward a faded photo on his nightstand. I nodded, said "we'll talk later," and moved on. There was no billing code for "talk later."

Mr. Chen died that afternoon. As a nurse quietly cleared his belongings, she handed me the photo. It was him as a young man, beaming, his arm around a woman, standing before a small grocery store with "CHEN'S MARKET" painted on the window.

The realization hit me like a physical blow. I knew his ejection fraction and his creatinine levels. I knew his insurance provider and his allergy to penicillin. But I didn't know his wife's name or that he had built a life from nothing with his own two hands. I hadn’t treated David Chen. I had managed the decline of a failing organ system. And in the sterile efficiency of it all, I had lost a piece of myself.

The next day, I bought a small, black Moleskine notebook. It felt like an act of rebellion.

My first patient was Eleanor Gable, a frail woman lost in a sea of white bedsheets, diagnosed with pneumonia. I did my exam, updated her chart, and just as I was about to leave, I paused. I turned back from the door.

"Mrs. Gable," I said, my voice feeling strange. "Tell me one thing about yourself that’s not in this file."

Her tired eyes widened in surprise. A faint smile touched her lips. "I was a second-grade teacher," she whispered. "The best sound in the world... is the silence that comes just after a child finally reads a sentence on their own."

I wrote it down in my notebook. Eleanor Gable: Taught children how to read.

I kept doing it. My little black book began to fill with ghosts of lives lived.

Frank Miller: Drove a yellow cab in New York for 40 years.
Maria Flores: Her mole recipe won the state fair in Texas, three years running.
Sam Jones: Proposed to his wife on the Kiss Cam at a Dodgers game.

Something began to change. The burnout, that heavy, gray cloak I’d been wearing for years, started to feel a little lighter. Before entering a room, I’d glance at my notebook. I wasn’t walking in to see the "acute pancreatitis in 207." I was walking in to see Frank, who probably had a million stories about the city. My patients felt it too. They'd sit up a little straighter. A light would flicker back in their eyes. They felt seen.

The real test came with Leo. He was 22, angry, and refusing dialysis for a condition he’d brought on himself. He was a "difficult patient," a label that in hospital-speak means "we've given up." The team was frustrated.

I walked into his room and sat down, leaving my tablet outside. We sat in silence for a full minute. I didn't look at his monitors. I looked at the intricate drawings covering his arms.

"Who's your artist?" I asked.

He scoffed. "Did 'em myself."

"They're good," I said. "This one... it looks like a blueprint."

For the first time, his gaze lost its hard edge. "Wanted to be an architect," he muttered, "before... all this."

We talked for twenty minutes about buildings, about lines, about creating something permanent. We didn't mention his kidneys once. When I stood up to leave, he said, so quietly I almost missed it, "Okay. We can try the dialysis tomorrow."

Later that night, I opened my Moleskine. I wrote: Leo Vance: Designs cities on paper.

The system I work in is designed to document disease with thousands of data points. It logs every cough, every pill, every lab value. It tells the story of how a body breaks down.

My little black book tells a different story. It tells the story of why a life mattered.

We are taught to practice medicine with data, but we heal with humanity. And in a world drowning in information, a single sentence that says, "I see you," isn't just a kind gesture.

It’s the most powerful medicine we have.
